women only: the gift poll---or: what women really want. ;)

Once or twice a year, [the other being Valentine's] jewelers and perfume makers go after the guys with ads attempting to persuade them that they're never going to figure what to get and that the 'easy' gift that always works is diamonds or perfume.

I am dubious. Whole lotta money---itty bitty wow factor where I'm concerned.

So, women of the Lounge, here's a poll. What would please YOU most?

Or add your own.

Hubby and I are a little crunched for cash this year, so we agreed not to get eachother anything for our birthdays (november) or the holidays, other than small token gifts.

My birthday was last weekend and hubby locked himself into the garage for three days working on a "project." He's been getting into woodworking and spent three days making me a small wooden box for my office desk - I had mentioned I wanted a small box/bowl to keep hard candies on my desk. It is a simple little box, not perfect, but I LOVE IT!!!!! Want to know why? He listened to some little hints I dropped and put time and thought into my gift. It wasn't a "rote" jewelry purchase or gift card. It wa special, from the heart, and a total surprise.

So it doesn't matter WHAT it is, but if it's something your lady wants/needs/appreciates/fits her. If she complains about her crappy gardening tools when you're doing yard work, make a mental note and buy her new gardening tools. If she loves to cook (for you, probably) and doesn't have the right pots/utensils, upgrade her cookware. If she loves birds, get her some new birdseed and a year's supply of feed. But if you've tuned her in and it comes from your heart, expensive or not, I'm sure she'll love it!

Did that help at all?

(BTW, can anyone help me knit a scarf on the sly by November 27th???)

A great vacation would be my first. We don't go on enough of them. If money was an issue, a nice dinner rendevous once a month would be nice also. I don't wear perfume, and very little jewelry

Men, nothing says Merry Christmas like a brand new set of top of the line garbage cans, complete with wheels and a handle! Best of luck.

one of my birthday presents was a set of rolling wheels that socket into the depressions in the bottom of that 32 g Rubbermaid Brute can I fill with ro/di and have to move 15 feet across the basement....ooh, just loverly! It glides! It rolls! It doesn't slosh on me feet anymore! There's something truly to be said for a good garbage can... Ah, but, Bat, I'll still go for the bottom half of that poll list!

As Pat explained to me about gifting clothes. It's basically a rip off gift as it's something that you have to buy holiday or not, same with appliances, furniture or anything else that needs replaced. Gifts should be fun. He said he'd rather have nothing, and he was very serious. I've taken that to heart. I've never gifted clothing to a kid since.

I agree. I buy my kids one gift that they are allowed to open Christmas Eve (PJ's). Everything else is fun stuff. As they get older, the gifts get smaller and more expensive. I started buying smaller trees a couple of years ago to make it look like more under them

Hubby and I aren't supposed to buy for each other. We usually pick up a few little things for each other and the kids get us stuff but nothing expensive.

I said diamonds, but only because I'm with someone that is willing to buy them for me. I've NEVER had nice jewelry, except for an opal and sterling bracelet. Matt got me a diamond necklace last year, and I couldn't have been anymore surprised. He said he got it simply because he knew I didn't have any diamonds or nice jewelry.

Really, though, I'll settle for anything. Most of the gifts he gives aren't expensive, but they come from the heart and he really does put a lot of effort into figuring out what to get.

I'm with english83 on this one. What I really want is to have some time together.

A cleaning lady was my wish last year, but I think he thought I was joking (I wasn't).

Jewelry is always nice, but most of what you see advertised on TV is junk. I'd rather a nice simple pair of plain earrings than a pair of "junk" diamond studs.

Yes, not every woman is wanting jewelry. I've not even seen my wedding rings in over 2 years.

I wear the same jewelry 24/7. It never comes off so I never have to worry about remembering to wear it. Sometimes I'll add 1-3 earrings, but only if I'm feeling leisurely and extraordinarily in the mood---most of the time it's straight out the door.
