Stocking of a 35-40 Hex

I recently came into possession of a 35-40 gallon Hex tank, complete with stand, and other saltwarer odds and ends. The guy who had it before me said he had kept a fish-only tank for about 5 years in it no problem and was just going to throw it away. The hood and light set-up is what came with the tank...probably not the best.

Since I have read really no articles saying anything about hex tanks...I'm at a loss. My question is what sort of stocking options do I have in this set-up? I do plan on using a Filstar XP series or Eheim series canister, and everything else that seems to go without saying in this set-up.

I am planning on doing a FOWLR with this set up. I have kept African Cichlids for a while, but I'm completely new to everything that is saltwater.
