Flow/return on 125...

Hey i will be setting up a 125g soon. It will be a Perfect 125g reef ready tank with 2 corner overflows. I was wondering what type of return pump I should have (gph and brand) and what power heads you all reccomend on a tank this size.I will be keeping mostly softies and LPS.

All most people say you need is 3 to 5 times / hour turnover through a sump or refugium.
What kind of powerheads depends on your budget. Maxi-jets are good, and cheap, but have a small area of flow in front of them. Modded maxi-jets are better, still cheap, and have a ton of wide, dispersed flow. Tunze Streams are great, very expensive, and have a lot of dispersed flow and are speed controllable.

As a student I am guessing more time then money. Here is a link to a group of 120's that may help in setting yours up. http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...readid=1247711

thanks.
I think a mag 12 and 2 koralia 4s will be fine. Im gona make the plumbing simple.

Also, what is a closed loop and whats the purpose?

the purpose is to not have powerheads in the main set up. Look nicer but more costly on energy and additional drilling and piping.

Close loop is a set up where a pump draws from the display tank and pumps directly back into the display tank. The water does not flow throught a sump or fuge.

A closed loop is a good idea. It does help to keep clutter out of your tank. Its draw back is exspense and a bit more work, not to mention more $$$ for electric. IMO a mag 12 is a bit on the large side for a 125. You will have a load of water through your sump. It also draws around 110 watts to operate. Might I suggest a smaller ocean runner. The Koralias should do the trick for flow. for softies and LPS.

I run a Mag 12 as a return. I have 2 Seio 820's, 2 Koralia 3's, and 2 MaxiJets with the Sureflow 1600 mods added to them. That's good flow. Most of the PH's can be hidden or disguised pretty well.
