Looks like it could be a young Crosshatch Triger. See below:

Just a guess.

It almost looks like the Bluethroat shown farther down on that article.
It may be a juv. Crosshatch and if so that is a heck of a find since they are practically unheard of in the trade.

Another possibility is a Sargassum.

lol... I was thinking crosshatch and typed blue throat. It's a crosshatch juvi? Blue throat's have a real specific blue splotch under their jaw...

if its a bluethroat I will eat my hat!

I don't think its a juv crosshatch, although pic does look similar, as it was a good 6-8" long (I would think that a crosshatch would be showing adult colouration by then).

The spots on its dorsal area suggest ringens to me.... is it possible to have a ringens x mento cross? do these fish occur in same waters?

To the best of my knowledge, X. ringens only occurs in the Western Atlantic; X. mento is only found in the Pacific.

Im leaning towards a hybrid of some sort though. My impression is X. mento crossed with X. lineopunctatus.

I was going to mention X. lineopunctatus as well due to the shape, it's taller and shorter. Ringens seem longer and slender (in height). I've also never seen a ringens with spots...

Looks like a nice juvi sargassum to me. It should be easy to find out - ask the shop where they got it. If they got it from an atlantic distributor, then it is a sargassum for sure.

I've never seen anything quite like it, and I am pretty familiar with blue throats, sargassum and crosshatch triggers. It sure is a pretty one. Are you going to buy it?

Not at its size I don't think it would still have juvi coloration...

Those who have X. ringens/Sargassum, have yours lost the spotted pattern they usually have across the whole body? The one in the photo has just the arc under the dorsal fin, while the rest of the body has a more 'crosshatch' appearance. Ive just never seen that species with that kind of pattern.

The one in the photo seems to be a bit shorter snout to tail for its overall body size than ringens usually are, though that could easily be an effect of the photo itself.

The three blue lines on the cheek and red margin tail are characteristics found across most Xanthichthys species, so its tough to give a definite answer based on just those marks. Honestly, it looks more like an odd Bluethroat female than a Sargassum to me (not convinced that thats it either though).
