building a glass tank

Ive aquired a 48 x 72 inch pice of 1/2 inch tempered glass and am wanting to build a tank, if i go with a 24 inch tall tank can i go with 1/2 inch glass and if so then how wide do i need to make the top bracing?

So you are planning on using that piece of tempered glass for the bottom making the dimension 72 long, 48 wide, 24 high? If so, I would probably use 1/2" glass and run a 2" eurobrace all the way around the top.

im thinking hes trying to build the entire tank from that one sheet...if thats the case, no luck there..you cant cut or drill tempered glass.

Sure you can...Just make sure you have a ShopVac close by...

Then you could make 10,000 little 1/4" tanks.

no, i do want to use the pice ive got as the bottom (footprint). I do realize that if i were to try to cut the tempered glass i would have a huge mess to clean up. So you think a 2 inch euro would be enouph on a than of that dimention? would you add a center brace?

I'm no expert, but with 1/2" glass and eurobracing i would think you don't need a center brace. If you want to be safe you could go with a 3" euro, but i would think 2" would be enough, and easier to get into the tank.

could you explain what u are using that huge piece of glass for?
if you are not going to try to cut it then it has to be the bottom or the front glass?

I learned the hard way, if you use the glass for the bottom make sure you give the tank some sort of "footprint" particularly the corners. Maybe some thin plywood that the tank sits in. I just bought and moved a diy glass tank and just crunched the corners when setting it down on my cement floor. Glass corners aren't strong!
