Phosphate Reactor Media

A few questions regarding Phosphate reactors, (Two Little Fishies)

1. What phosphate removing media does everyone use in their phosphate reactors?
2. Dose amount per gallons?
3. Length media is left in?
4. And does anyone mix carbon?

Thanks, Chris

1.Phosban
2.full can 150g for my 76g
3.Unknown 2 weeks and has pulled my phos down from 1.5 to .02
I'll replace it when it stops lowering phosphates.
4. run a second reactor for carbon

My phosphates are undectitible, or very very low. So would about a cup work for a 90?

I would think you could put more in and just change it less often say every 3 months which is what I'm planning on doing once I hit 0

I just went with Two Little Fishies phosban since that's the reactors that I use.
So far it's really pulling it down nicely. I haven't tried any other brands so I couldn't say if it's there's anything better.

I use DFS phospure and carbon mixed.

I use the recommended amount and change once a month.

Wondering about the media myself. Anyone use seachem sea gel? It is premixed carbon and phosguard. I think if people mix the two anyway or run two reactors this would work fine. The only downside I can think of is one media would expire quicker than the other , which would lead more frequent changing. Any other expieriences.

Well Carbon I believe is supposed to be changed 48 to 72 hours. Phosban being a little longer. That is why I was asking if anyone mixed them together.

chrismhaase - I have two phosphate reactors, Kent phos and Two Little Fishies phosban. I prefer the Two Little Fishies reactor.

The kent reactor seems harder to align the top piece w/ center tube to the main section w/center tube when putting the lid back on. I've had no problem with this with the phosban reactor.

I use to run carbon and rowaphos in one reactor, but have since separated the media between two reactors because often you need to change one media before the other is ready to be changed out.

May want to check this place out: http://www.twopartsolution.com/

You can get phosphate remover and carbon much cheaper there. I have used just about every brand of PO4 reducing media, this is the best you will find for the price.

I run carbon and GFO in a fluidized reactor in about a 5 to 1 ratio, changing it out every two weeks.

So if I have a 90 SPS doiminated tank with a 100 gallon Rubbermaid Sump, actually 75 gallons in there, then how much carbon should I use and how much GFO?

According to the carbon it says 3 tablespoons per 50 gallons, so for about 150 gallons which is my total system that equals 1/2 cup.

So if the 1/2 cup is the 5 in the 5:1 Ratio, then I should use about a 1/10 of a cup.

Equation: 1/2 cup X 1/5= 1/10th right???

It would be 1/2 cup of carbon and about 1/10 cup of phosphate remover. I would cut both in half and change it every couple weeks.

Only exception is IF you have PO4 in your tank, you'll want to work it down to zero first.

I just did a test and if it isn't 0, which I think it is, then it is like 0.000001 or something so small.

Saliferts. and I was joking about the 0.00001, all I was saying was it is either not detectable or very very low.

Re: Phosphate Reactor Media

Hi Chris,

I used two Phosphate Reactors (Two Little Fishies) looped together before.

1. What phosphate removing media does everyone use in their phosphate reactors?
I used Rowa

2. Dose amount per gallons?
I used 250g in each Phosphate Reactors.

3. Length media is left in?
I periodically checked the PO4 level by hanna meter. When I noticed the level of PO4 from the reactor's output was above 0, I changed the media.

4. And does anyone mix carbon?
I didn't use carbon

1. What phosphate removing media does everyone use in their phosphate reactors? Phosar & ROWA

2. Dose amount per gallons? 15 tablespoons for each reactor, one carbon & one phosar

3. Length media is left in? 2 to 3 weeks

4. And does anyone mix carbon? no, I only use a separate reactor that is looped before phosar.
