Question Hypo Salinity treatment

I have had my baby sailfin and one neon goby in a hospital tank at 1.009 specific gravity for 6 weeks now and I saw a new black spot form on the sailfins bottom fin. I think I might have to bring the salt level back up to 1.20 and then treat with formalin but dont want to stress the fish out. Has anyone had to deal with black spot?

He eats like crazy. I feed him a mixture of foods soaked in garlic and vitamins.

Well he stopped eating like crazy and has become a little bit less aggressive. I have started the ramp back up to normal salinity and added formalin. The new black spot was gone in a hour. I will leave the formalin for 24 hours and then do a 50% water change then a few days later start with 20% water changes for a few days. Then the carbon filter will go back in and the fish will stay at 1.21 salinity for two weeks and then back into the big tank. That is the game plan. It is mostly an experiment so if anyone has any words of wisdom fire away.

From what I understand black spot is a flat worm (Paravortex) that is very hard to rid of because it can live in substrate with no host for up to 2 months. I will post the results incase anyone has to deal with this burden but I hope you dont.

with being a flat worm, you might try running levamisole in the quarentine system at a ratio of .4mg/100L with the fish. That is if the formalin doesnt nuke it first!

also, check out the club forums at www.rmrc.info!

cheers~!

I use to go to RMRC more but it seemed like I got more of a response to posts on this page. I just checked and it looks like a lot more people are using RMRC which is awesome. I will get more involved as well.
