Tang Police, mount up!! :)
Just kidding! Doing some thinking and planning ahead, because I would like to get a/some tangs in the near future (4-6 months). I was thinking Powder Blue, Naso, and or a Yellow Hawaiian tang, not all 3, just not sure which one yet. Leaning Powder Blue. I have a 120g (72" x 18 x 18") with probably 150# of LR, lots of open swimming room, and pretty stable param's. Tank has been running close to a year. I know that I need to set-up a QT tank for when/if I get a tang, any other thoughts on how I should handle this? What do I need to think of for "down the road" type stuff? Don't want to do anything that I shouldn't be doing !!
Thanks everyone! |

I think you could do all three, even though I don't care for the poop machines(yell. tnag) I've got PBT, naso, orange shoulder, 2 blue's,sailfin, scopas, and Yel tang all in my 280g. I'll be upgrading within the next year to at least a 500g, hopefully bigger. anyway all are happy and no problems, yet. They've been together for about a year, last addition. good luck

The tank is probably too small for a naso, in my opinion, but you should be fine with the other two. Naso tangs get huge - like, easily over a foot long.

Do you have a quantine? The powder blue is risky because of the thin layer of skin they have so ich can become an issue very very fast. The yellow tang would be fine I'd reccomend the kole tang. The achilles tang is very nice too better coloration than the powder blue.

Yellow's are "poop machines" huh?? That's funny! I am trying to stay with a little bit of a Hawaiian theme with the reef, but maybe that guys will have to stay away.
Malhavoc, I was not sure if my tank was big enough for a Naso, from all the research and from what I hear, that probably is true. Bummer, they are SO beautiful. I will be setting up a QT tank here soon, any recommendations? Is that something that I can just take some of the water I use from water changes to fill the QT with? I have to do some reading on how to set one up properly. |

Hey Black_majik, how has the care been on your Achilles? I did a little reading and they recommend only "experts" have this species. I am far from that, thoughts?

Volk- remeber you can purchase a smaller fish and upgrade your tank in a couple years. " Honey we have to get the bigger tank or tangy will be in trouble" works for me, Next tank will be 500-1000gallon, just for the "kids" mind you, lol.

My PBT is a real bully.
I recently learned that PBT and Hippo tangs don't mix.

If you want an Achilles tang you better have a ton of flow. I think a Yellow and a Powder Blue or a Yellow and Achilles would work. Achilles are hard to come by nowadays and usually have a pretty high price tang though. I went triple digits with mine. Try and stay with tangs that wont reach a foot in length.

Rockhead, I like where your head is at!! Good man. Already have a next tank in mind though, probably getting it this winter. Wish I could get a 500-1000gal!! That's be sweet. But my tank is built into a see-through wall, and I have a foot-print of 72" x 18", and my arms are only so long to reach down into the tank!! So 180 is about it.... Unless........ j/k.......
Xenon, do you think that is just your fish having a attitude problem? Or is that a trait of the PBT?? AquaReeferMan, I think I will pass on the Achilles for now, I need some more experience keeping my param's perfect, and more flow I am guessing too. I also don't want to get into triple digits for fish right now, I'd rather spend that on equipment and a ring for my girlfriend who wants to be a wife(to me I hope!!!) So, anyone want to buy a Jetta that goes really fast??? HA! |

Update:
Got a Yellow-Bellied Hippo Tang!!(told they were pretty rare???? y/n???) About the size of a quarter, seems to be healthy and swimming strong. Got Nori sheets, feed brine and flake, anything else?? Also, stupid yellow-tailed damsels keep trying to do a mating dance to the tang. Stupid Damsels.... anyone want 3? Anything I can do to stop that? It's getting better, and I am sure that will stop shortly when the Hippo gets bigger! |

If you don't have any cleaner shrimp, I would pick up a few. I have 3 in my 180G and my tangs are their biggest customers.
