Holy cow that thing is scary. Sucks about the clam....Makes me think of all the pretty clams I've lost over the years.
So its a Planaria sp? Kinda cool looking. For a creature of destruction. I would post this over at the Tridacna Forum so that other clam keepers can get a good look at that menace.

some quotes i have found.
"This species preys on Tridacnid clams and actually resembles the mantle of a T. squamosa. It needs to be removed." "Its a Phrikoceros mopsus or a polyclad flatworm. They are nocturnal and a mollusk predator. not very common, and very difficult to find on lr. another reason to quarantine!" |

WOW !!
I didnt know polyclad flatworms eat clams, I had two of them in my tank and I have 7 clams, I caught only 1 of them, and havent seen the other in months. They were going to town on my snails. I caught the one by baiting a snail upside down in the middle of the sand bed away from rock, they must smell or sense them, it worked for the one. OUCH Now I am worried for sure !

How long did you have the clam? Too bad you did not catch the predator earlier

So should we treat and dip clams also. I am not sure I have never had to treat for flatworms but have read on here about people having to treat all there corals....Scott

Just as an aside.....I've never had problems with anything from SWP. Now The Fish Place, that's another story.
Sucks about the clam. |

If you read enough threads here on RC (or any other board), you'll find someone has had some type of problem with almost every store and/or product out there...

The reason I asked how long he had it, I bought a clam from them not too long ago that is doing fine to replace a clam I bought that died for no apparent reason.

Sorry about your clam. I was at SWP today and the other clams are thriving. I have purchased many specimens of coral ,fish and clams there without many problems over the years. The tanks are clean and well maintained. I have a Squamosa and a Derasa purchased there which have been thriving for several years

I should add the clam I had that died for no apparent reason did not come from SWP but from RC. Randy gave me a credit for the purchase as the other two clams that came from him the same week are still thriving. The one that died was larger, and died within 2 days...it was drip acclimated and my water parameters were perfect. I wanted to replace with another larger clam (Crocea) which Randy has not had only the 2" ones.
The one I got from SWP about a month ago is a dark blue with gold spots on the mantle, about 5" in size. Randy does have some awesome looking Maxima's right now, at least he did...I picked one up last weekend that has a very bright aqua colored mantle....looks great in "Clam City" as my kids call it. |

Have one of those things and I was wondering why my snails were dying and my croceas mantle was eaten. It's hard to catch though. I'll try the upside down snail.
What about flatworm exit? I wonder. maybe I'll contact salifert. |
