Just Added Uv...pictures Of 180
I got the camera out to see the difference that running a UV has made in my tank. I'm sharing! They are Right End, Right Center, Center, Left Center and Left End, respectively! Thanks for looking and commenting! How have you all done with using UV? I had issues with waterborne algae, because I have 5 tangs in my 180 display, I feed them well and the nutrients keep a healthy amount waterborne algae in the water column. This sure seems to have helped. I'm currently running a 50 watt Aquanetics UV 24/7. How long do you all run yours? Thanks!
Phil

Dont use it, never intend to. I think if you have algae issues, there are better ways to deal with it than UV. Phosphate reactor comes to mind, good skimming, less feeding etc etc.

But I have 5 tangs to feed! Phosban is aluminum based, is that correct?

I run UV 24/7. I purchased the unit because my Powder Blue Tang kept coming down with ich. Since running UV the fish has not had ich once.

My water clarity is sure greatly improved! Seem to be improving light penetration into the tank also!

do you mean UV as your lighting supplements ? or as filter ?

Its killing waterborne algae and is clearing the water. Whe I do a water change now, no light green tinge in the white bucket.

I have been thinking of running my 40w UV on my SPS tank as I have a couple of tangs.......
Your tank is absolutely freakin BEAUTIFUL! WOW, your colors are amazing...corals look healthy!...if you notice a difference then it might be something I may try...

I'm not entirely sold on UV. I never ran a UV, then recently added one after an ich breakout in my tank. I saw no difference, other than the chiller running a little more. I still see an ich spot every once in a while, and there's been no visible difference in water clarity (which was good to begin with).

I'm one on the ither side of the fence. I've never qt a fish/rock etc and every single one of my tanks has have and will have ich.
I run an undersized 25 watt in my 200 and certainly notice a diff in terms of disease and so forth. I feed properly and so forth but still discontinued my UV(as a test) meaning used it for only 8 hrs a day w/o any and i mean any changes in my husbandry or fish additions or any new stressors just to find out some ich issues retarted. I also recently added a new genichantus to my setup and she's full of it( from stress)- certainly w/o the UV I believe it would be dead by now. Do I have scientific proof NO!!! Anecdotal YES!! |

I dont run UV but I do inject Ozone. I will never try to keep fish again with out one or the other. Its so nice not to worry about ICH. I do see a few spots every now and then and I see more when the dryer needs recharging but its never a problem.

Big Boy, I got the pictures...very nice! Let's work out a trade!
Dog boy Dave...Do you monitor your ORP with the ozone?

I run it in both my reef and my prop system, and it doesn't seem to affect my sps. I don't, however, use large doses of it. I've read where it can drop your alk if you use too much at a time. Besides, I've never really been a big heavy metal fan.....

Salt Rookie, I do not monitor ORP. I have been running for ozone for 8 months or so. I turned it up slowly and watched closely. It is a large system and the ORP is injected into the skimmer where it must flow through 60 gallons of pretty low flow sump with mangroves, algae, DSB and several open brain canary corals. I feed heavy and also have another true DSB plumbed into the display. Lotsa organics. I would expect to see stress in my sump if any ozone was escaping from skimmer.

I do NOT monitor ORP, but I'm not injecting ozone. I opted to go with UV, because, I think its more nautral (sun produces UV-A and UV-B). It is a remote light source that nukes unwanted suspended pathogens, and does not add anything to the water. My water clairity is greatly improved, and it appears that my colors are getting better. This could be the better light penetration, but I hope it is the cleaner water column. I also think it is a great phrophelaxis for diseases and parasites. Any thoughts??
