broken metal halide light(dead fish and corals)

Will a broken light bulb over open tank causes fish and corals to die? Bulb was still on but glass casing had broken off and fall into tank. None of the corals are open and fish are dieing.

Yes.

The glass casing on most high intensity discharge lamps (like metal halide) is typically made of quartz in order to block UV. If the outer casing breaks off and the lamp still fires your getting no UV protection which WILL kill your coral and i believe, can harm your fish.

i would remove that lamp immediately.

sorry to here about your fish and coral , hopefully they will recover.
how long was this broken bulb turned on over the tank?

I don't know how long the casing was off, I notice that the corals didn't want to open yesterday, and the coraline is turning white the tank looks like death it's been a very sad day for me.

It's deadly to your animals and very dangerous for you too. Carefully remove and toss it. Here's my experience with unshielded bulbs...

Just wish I would have noticed it sooner. Lost Yellow Tang, Coral Beauty, Flame Angel, Male Maroon Clown,Mardian is still hanging on but don't know if he's going to pull thru, and lots of corals.

Are any of your tank's parameters out of whack?

Sorry to hear about your fish
