I think there are manufacturers who run a MJ externally for kalk reactors. So yeah, it looks like you can run it externally.

I have run maxijets externally on closed loops and skimmers with no problem.

I use a MJ 1200 externally on my kalk reactor. No leaks.

I run 3 of them externally.

Sometimes they have to be submersed on startup, to prime them they must push the air out and get water flowing. Once they are pumping water you can pull them out.

Great for keeping unwanted heat out of the water.

Even on Melev's site he uses one to make a closed loop, and runs it externally!

maxi-jet's are power heads. They are designed to handle being run in the air like any power head should be capable of doing. Even the 1200 can be run this way. But heat kills, even when it's just a magnetic coil. If you want your pump to last longer, keeping it cooler gives it a longer life, which is why most prefer the 1200 to be submerged, but it shouldn't result in premature failure unless it's running hot. (your external pump will need air flow, you can't just stick it in a closed space in the air and expect it to last very long).

Maxijets have a nice little inner chamber if you take off the top. If you silicone the bottom of it (there are small imperfections that would let water out) you can fill it with water to keep it cool if you run it externally.

I plan to use it as a silencer for the venturi on my skimmer.

I was looking at it and I remember the box or manual shows a configuration where it is used as a external pump like for a waterfall or sump

I don't know how you connect the input attachment properly (and safely) tho.
