Some people use tap water in their reefs, but I would say very few people sucessfully keep SPS on tap water. Even if your water tests ok, IMO it's only a matter of time before you get something in the tap water that kills all your corals.

IMO...Tap water quality is inconsistent. Not to be trusted.
You are going to buy/grow expensive coral....why not spend the extra $0.60 cents a gallon...?

nononononono! Not if it's spring water. Not if it's snow melt.
The reason for using ro/di is that it strips out everything but the H and the 2 0's, so that when you put in your salt mix, it reconstitutes ocean water, not lake water, not agricultural runoff, not the city water we drink because we need OUR set of minerals and such...which aren't ocean water, either. We're not fish. They're not mammals. They need the sea stuff in the correct proportions.

Certainly not for an SPS tank. Go hang out in the SPS forum and check out how many of those guys are using tap. None. There's many other reasons besides nuisance algae to why tap water is undesirable in reef aquaria. Here's a good read.

I use Tap water now after months of using RO water that I was paying for at my local grocery store and realizing that their filter maintaince was worse than my freaking tap water!!
They need to be charged for selling that water as RO water. Always test your water from whereever it comes from. My tank is mostly LPS not SPS and my coral are thriving if this helps you! I had so much algae when I was using the store bought RO water I couldn't believe it when I figuered out the problem.. In a perfect world we would all have the money to have a RO system at home to use for our tanks... (That is my goal in the near future) |

The tap water in San Diego is, for lack of a better term, crap...
I have switched to RO/DI and it seems to have made a noticeable difference in my tank.

Never trust or use tap water. NEVER TRUST OR USE TAP WATER. If you look at any posts there is a never ending tail of proplems from high readings poor stock growth and red slime. NEVER USE TAP and your SW experiance will be much more satifying.

no never, I have tap water that has been rated best in PA and still use Ro/di. Don't even think about running a SPS tank on tap...one bad day of run off/heavy rain or highway spill will open up a whole can of woop-a s s on your reef.
