they suck nitrates out of the water, so if you have a hard time keeping nitrates low, they help.

i add them because i like them though

They also add diversity and becasue they have basically similar requirements while being harmless it might be a very logical choice.

I thought Calfo says something about them taking ammonia out of the water better than nitrate...I may be wrong,

As for why to add them....well, until I find a glowing, irridescent, electric blue/green acro....clams will have to suffice

I like to put things in the sand to create diversity, clams work great for that for me.

Yes they do absorb ammonia which helps reduce nitrates. But, the more diverse a biotope the better in the long run. Besides they do add to the total aquascape of the tank.

I'm with the others in the added aesthetic quality of clams. Given their similar requirements i opted for clams over LPS, though I keep zoas and blastos on my sandbed.

I've had more non-hobbiests notice my clams than anything else when they first see the tank. My girlfriend included. Seems that since most of my sps look the same to those that aren't avid reefers that the contrast of clams draws their attention.

I vote for pretty: blues like a crocea are harder come by in a reef, and they help balance the pinks and purples and greens. Plus they're reactive [corals don't move that fast] and extremely interesting if you get into their biology---amazing creatures. I feed mine phyto, which I think helps the general biology of the tank...promoting all kinds of filter feeders like sponges, etc.

Plus, we've got the mh lights, and if there's room, why not?

This made me crack up so bad- my husband thinks fish tanks are cool and really supports me in keeping ours but he doesn't quite have the extreme level of enthusiasm as I do and he totally calls them sticks all the time

its hilarious

clams = look awesome!!!

I didn't really like clams when I brought my first one, I only got it because my wife loves them and if she is happy with the tank then I get to spend more $ on it. I love them now and I have realized that I can get them and my wife doesn't say a word abot me spending $ on the tank.
