Mantis Shrimp
Mantis Shrimp
I am consolidating a few small 10 and 5 gallon specimen tanks into a 20 with alot of live rock, 3 damsels and two clowns along with a peppermint shrimp, hermits, snails and an emerald crab. The Mantis(green) has lived peacefully with the damsels in the past. He is about one inch and I have yet to put in into the 20. The question is whether I can put him in this new small 20 gallon tank without him killing all the other inverts. He was a hitchhiker from some live rock and I have had him for 3 months. I cant keep seperate tanks (too much work with a 220 reef) but hate the thought of having to put him down. Anyone have any views on this. Thanks mates __________________ Grouper25

depends on what type of mantis he is, but he will most likely eat all of your inverts. also depending upon what type he is, he may get much larger than he is right now. i had one that came in on a piece of rock and went unnoticed for about 6 months... and then he ate probably $100 of livestock... fish, inverts, you name it. be very careful. if you don't want to give him his own tank, i would try to find a fellow reefer who wants him. they can make very cool pets if they aren't in the position to eat your other beloved critters.

Do not put him in there unless you can accept that he probably will kill everything in the tank overtime. Which is probably not what you want. Why not get rid of it at a LFS instead of flushing the poor guy? Or post a add on RC. 1" is small, he will grow and become a brawler.
