pet peeve

Zoo's are a collection of living animals usually for public display....

Zoa's is an abbreviation for zoAnthids, a type of coral.

My pet peeve is when a zoanthid gets "identified" by a flashy name and go up 400% per polyp.

Oh and I thought people used "zoos" as an abreviation for zoanthids because so many people actually say that.

'zoo' is a nickname that *everyone* has used *forever*. zoa is a truncation of 'zoanthid' that became popular with the latest batch of zoo newbies who think it makes them sound smart. i'll take a one syllable nickname over a 2 syllable truncation anyday.

I'm with DrBegalke, and I think SnailBert may share this... The abbreviations and acronyms are peeves of mine. Especially when I see those with much experience talking to someone who's new. They also make the search function near useless.

Also, I've closed windows to many threads when spelling is forgotten and words like then, than, your, you're, etc. are so badly misused my head starts to hurt. I once saw someone back up their "intelligence" by stating they had a bachelors degree after their spelling was commented. They misspelled "bachelor".

The RC search function doesn't need any help for being useless....

Zoo is just an abbreviation because people are lazy. I am lazy, I admit!

Let me ask you, do you drive a car or an automobile?

hmm.... in other languages automobile is even reduced to just auto... hows that for out of context confusion?

I'll spend the extra 1/10th of a second and 1/10,000th of a calorie to type/say the third syllable. I don't see it so much as making me sound smart as *not* making me sound otherwise.

Zoo's, Zoa's, Zoanthids. Really it doesn't matter. I agree that it may be annoying for someone who knows better. It is up to that person to educate the ignorant. My pet peeve is improper grammar, which some of you in this thread complaining about Zoo people are guilty of. Another pet peeve of mine is PH, ph. ITS pH PEOPLE!!!!! It stands for percentage of hydrogen ion.

Also, ryan, his definition of pH is correct. . You could be technical, but his answer is pretty much correct.

Yeah, pH is a strange creature and I retract my earlier statement. I actually also agree with him, however I think it ventures too far into the realm of "nit-picky." Capital letters I can let slide.

I think some of the confusion is because many people pronounce it Zooanthid, and not Zoanthid like they're supposed to. Zo sounds like toe.
