How fast can xenia spread

I have xenia now and I can put something up against one of them and it will usually split and attach within 2 days

seems like I doubler in quantity of my xenia stalks once a month

is this considered successful , or can it grow faster.

I cant cut a stalk off at the base and attach it to another rock , and the base from the cut off piece will start growing polyps within 5 -6 days

let it spread onto strategically placed rubble, then you can frag it for trades. Stereomandan is right - they're weeds. almost fast enough for nutrient transport

xenia can spread like wild fire in the right condition. It can also disappear in an equally fast time.

so i got a coral beauty angel, left town for a week.

and they were nicely trimmed.

substitute [xenia] for [macroalage] or [star polyps] but at least xenia are easier to remove.

jlo0218,

What sort of tank do you run? Do you have any problems with the Coral Beauty nipping at SPS polyps?

I used to like xenia too until it overtook my tank and I know have to manually remove it with forceps. It will grow back from just a film of xenia material left on a rock. It truly is a weed. It's harder to get rid of than algae.

Oh man, there's this guy in this forum that has a 55G tank that is, pretty much ok to be called, a xenia tank. It is filled xenia althroughout the rockwork and the back wall. I actually liked that tank. I hope this thread finds him/her so he/she can share the tank pic.

Since I started the saltwater hobby , I have always wanted to keep xenia , as several people here know , I made many unsuccessful attempts ,

I found one of the main problems , which was not using reverse osmosis water,

that was the main thing

I have the pink xenia elongata I think , here ni a week or so , Im going to be getting several stalks of the silver elongata

I have an old high school friend that messaged me and told me that he had the blue xenia, I may try to get him to let me frag it or something

isnt the blue xenia really expensive/

It spreads rapidly for me. If you place some low in the aquarium and place some rubble above it and/or in the direction of the flow, you can make it go where you desire. I evev have it growing on the glass.

I understand now why people call it a weed.
It can spread so fast, it's almost like overnight it can move from one rock to another.
I've had it actually pull rocks and frags down in the process.

ivce made several attempts at getting it on the glass, but everytime I frag a piece to a rock then lean it on the glass, it doesnt do good at all.
