Do you need a glass sheild for a phoenix 14k DE ?

Hello Guys,

I've read that you do not need a glass cover for the phoenix 14k since the bulb has UV filtering on the outer glass envelope.

Is this true? If this is true... i'm pulling off the glass

SE (mogul type) has the uv glass built into the bulb. DE dosen't have the uv protection, unless the phoenix bulb is made differently.

I was under the impression that all DE bulbs needed a shield, I may be wrong though.

No, not all. The pheonix is a 'borderline' bulb FWIW...

Some DE bulbs are starting to come out with the UV sheild built on, just like SE bulbs. The Elos 10,000K is one example... it doesnt need a sheild.

Some DE bulbs dont have the sheild, but their UV output is rather low to being with... the pheonix is one such case. The problem is that while they may are running their UV output is low enough to go withoug a sheild, but UV levels in MH bulbs peak during the firing/startup, not during running. So the UV-B during the startup could still be a problem.

YOU better put a shield on those Pheonix 14ks or your gonna be very very sorry.
Take my word for it.
I had same bulbs and accidently left one of my sheilds off after cleaning it.
EVERYTHING under that bulb got fried!!!! The entire right side of my 180 was dead.

I do not think the original poster needs to be confused by a discussion on what if.

Simple logic is that.....

I FRIED half my tank because there was no shield on a Phoenix 14k DE bulb.

Every SPS and LPS under that light was dead within hours.
