nice looking corals collection. What made you decide to mail-order from Dr. Mac?

I've read a few good things from them and also they had a pretty good deal on Maricultured corals (which are the only type of corals I buy). Buy 3 get 1 free, so more or less 25% off.

How is your tank coming along? You haven't updated your thread for quite a while.

The tank is going @ a snail pace (an on again / off again progress). My two little princesses keep me a little busy to say the least. I hope to complete the lighting and fan installation by this weekend.

Awesome tank!

what lighting are you using? I noticed there was a change in colour from blue to slight pink.

Thanks! I'm using a combination of MH and T5s. Reeflux 10k with ATI blue plus.

You won't believe how much i got him for...$50. It is not a Red Sea one but still a very good price for him.

It has been a while since I've updated this thread and lots has happen and in the works. The only things that has changed is the replacement of my old Pentair Aquastep UV 25W with a new Emperor Aquatics HO 50W. A much better and higher quality piece of equipment.

Livestock wise I've added some more frags that I purchased from the Coral Reserve over at Dr.Mac. These pieces are really nice and will let you guys see them once i take some pics.

Here are some of the equipment changes I am doing over the xmas break. All of the equipment should be coming very soon.

Lighting Changes
-Change out my lighting system to all T5s with Icecap Ballasts and SLR reflectors. 9 x 60'' T5s that are overdriven
-Make a hanging system for the lights with SunLift hangers
-Make a simple canopy cover that can easily be removed
-Add six CurrentUsa Moonlights

Flow
-Remove Hammerhead/OM4way with 12 flare loclines
-Remove the Wavysea from return and convert it to a simple stationary output with 4 lflare oclines.
-Use two Wavysea with a new Dart as a closed loop with either 2 or 1 flare locline on each outlet.

I previously had T5s on my old tank and the color and growth were fantastic. After trying practically all the bulbs on the market for 250SE, I don't think i will be able to get the color I am striving for. It'll be hard for me to give you guys good feedback since they will be only setup for a few days, when i feel that the corals have adjusted to the new type of lighting and intensity I'll give you guys some better feedback. Hopefully at that time my corals won't be all dead or bleached.

are 60" bulbs long enough?
What color ratio are you using?
Do you have any experience with DE bulbs?
Why did you remove the Oceans Motions?

Sorry for all the questions!

60'' is not as long as the tank but if i stagger them slightly it will be fine. Even if i don't it is ok, my old tank use to be 60'' and at the time when T5s came out they were only available at 48''. If you are really picky then it is slightly visually dimmer, hence my change to MH at that time.

I use to have 6 bulbs on my old fixtures and was extremely happy with it; 2 actinic, 2 blue plus, and 2 aquablue. With the newer one since the bulb variety is much better now i bought a bunch of bulbs to see what combination i might like. So at this point i'm not too sure yet what i will settle for. These are the bulbs in my inventory that i will play with (6 blue plus, 2 actinic 03, 2 pro color, 1 GE 6500, 4 aquablue).

I do not have any experience with DE bulbs at all. The only one that intrigues me is the phoenix 14k but the aquaconnect 14k SE is nearly identical to it which is a bulb i tried.

Though I cannot complain about the total amount of random flow coming from the Hammerhead and OM, I didn't like the way it covered my tank after seeing how well the Wavysea does it on my return. The wayvsea is much more effective and requires less plumbing and flow to achieve a better coverage. The wavysea will have a strong consistent output that will touch every square inch in the target area in a full cycle, the OM cannot do this in any imaginable way.

I don't mind questions at all, it benefits the both of us

Very nice tank and interesting read. I am getting ready to upgrade for a 180 to a 220 and this has been very helpful. I am interested to see what you think of the t5s after getting them sorted out.

What is your ballast / bulb combonation? Just wondering how you end up with 9 bulbs.

Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful. I think what might have been more useful for more people is if I logged my build with a little more details, like most do. There is always another tank...hehe

Bulb combination that i have in my head right now is as follow.

ATI Blue Plus - Ballast 1
ATI Pro Color - Ballast 3
ATI AquaBlue - Ballast 2
GE 6500 - Ballast 3
ATI Blue Plus - Ballast 1
ATI AquaBlue - Ballast 2
ATI Pro Color - Ballast 3
ATI AquaBlue - Ballast 2
ATI BLue Plus - Ballast 1

I ended up with 9 bulbs because i bought three icecap 660 and each of them can handle three bulbs. Yeah no problem i'll let you know how it turns out.

Oh, I see now, because you are using 5ft bulbs. WHat not run 4 4ft bulbs of each, then you would end up with 12 bulbs and would be able to stagger them well.

I was thinking of running 3ft bulbs on my tank and was think I would need 16 bubls, off 4 ballasts, but I must admit I have little expereince with t5's. I do plan on housing just acropora.

I think that 4ft would be too short even if i staggered them, since i'd be missing a total of 2 ft per row. But if you can find a good way to use 48'' bulbs then it would be nice since the bulb selection are much better at that length.

My original idea was to use two 36'' bulbs per row but the replacement cost would be nearly double since the price difference between 36'' and 60'' is very small. Good thing is that if i do want to switch to 36'' i would only need to buy endcaps since I'm actually overlapping two 36'' SLR reflectors to make my 60'' reflector.

Cam I ask what type of overflows you have on that tank? Internal or external? Custom made?

Keep us posted on the lights. If 9 60" work out, I may go that way as well.
