I run a Red Sea also. I purchased the large air dryer. My water is super clear. I have a 150gallon tank.

I had been running it until my ozone generator died. A replacement is on the way. Makes the water crystal clear. My corals love the clean water.

Thanks for the replys guys!
Kip - awesome tank, very inspirational.

From what i understand, i would need a ozone generator (im thinking of the gen-x model 250 mg/hr) an air dryer, ozone tubing and an orp controller. is this correct. and i am waiting to hear back from MRC if i can get an ozone port on my skimmer or if it's too late.

I use mine every couple of weeks to clear the water of yellowing proteins. I find that if I leave it on constantly, I get reduced skimming and higher nitrates.

it can, but you will want to vent the air outside the house or pass it thru carbon

other thing.. that octopus is probably extruded acrylic and over time the o3 will break it down

If your unit is not large enough for your system it will shut down your protien skimmer. Mine is rated for 300 gallons of water. It only comes on a few times aday for about 20 minutes. I have zero nitrates.

I understand what Kep is saying. I have not perosnally experienced this, but I think that he is saying that his skimmer production is down when he runs the ozone, which in turn leads to higher than usual (for his tank) nitrates.

I don't know the science behind it but, my skimmer doesn't kick out as much when I'm running ozone at levels around 25mg/hr.

This could be part of the reason. But I think the other part is that the ozone breaks down both skimmable and unskimmable proteins, which means there more waste being processed by bacteria than without ozone.

This is what I imagine happens anyway. But I definitely get less skimate and more nitrates if I run it constantly

I have been running ozone around a year. Probably would have given up without it. Had bad algae and the ozone took care of it. I did buy a controller, but my ORP was always low and I didn't like the ozone running all the time. Right now I run it for 30 minutes 3x a day - every 8 hours. I have the opposite result as others - it makes my skimmer go nuts. Had to open the gate valve on my MR-2 skimmer all the way so it didn't take out so much waste/water. You can get the ozone port for the My Reef Creations skimmer after you have purchased the skimmer. They just screw into the Beckett injector housing between that and the air valve. I use a Enaly ozone generator that I bought off of Ebay.

You need to get a proper unit that can handle the load on your tank. If you have a heavy load due to poor water quality and alot of fish and heavy feeding it may not be worth it. I have a unit rated for a 300 gallon system. I have about 200 gallons of water at most. My unit can raise the ORP very fast. It barley effects my skimmer. The Air dryer protects the unit from moisture damage.

If you can not get a good unit just run carbon.

From what i understand, 1mg/hr per 2 gallons of water? and from everyone's responses, there are no ill effects of running ozone?

Reviving Ozone Generators

I have gone through two Red Sea units and called Red Sea for advice.
I was told that I could revive the unit that does not genrate ozone by unplugging and detaching t from the tubing and taking a syringe of ro/di water, inject it into the in or out port and let air dry for a day.
I do this periodically and it cleans up any salt build up.
Good luck
p.s. I have been running one for years and enjoy clear water and no algae build up
