Nice code, threw it in my bobcad to generate the cutter path and looks pretty good...

guido_kp Well it probably was a little longer but it was pretty simple after doing the first one. That looks great have you tried cutting it yet? How thick is the part? If you reduce the drop from the leading to the trailing edge of the helix to about an 1/8" it would be stronger and still seal good against the o-ring.

Bean its a blast. I run them all day at work and its still not enough. I've started collecting ball screws and rails and hope to be building a router in the next few months.

Ragsy1 glad to see it's working for you.

I'd use the small machine to make one out of 3/8 acrylic. It should be fine to get one made from aluminum on the bigger machine. The K2's are nice but they never seem to have them in stock.

i would but im havin trouble getting meshcam to output a usable file. too many choices to make as far as cutting options. it looks like a twist with my gcode backplotter but mach3 thinks otherwise. guess i need to play with it some more. as far as humboldt's flange, its flawless. i machined it into the top of a mdf board just messing around.

Thesaent14 Whats wrong with the hitachi? I was considering getting one for my project. You got the 2 1/4 horse variable speed one right?
Oh those dfx files you sent me. You know there not for 8" tube right?

guido_kp throw up a pic of that mdf part you machined. I sent you a pm.

Hello CNC guys. I thought I would post over here since it seems that this is where most of the CNC-minds have gathered (at least ones with functioning CNC's, not the ones still building theirs in the DIY CNC thread).

It looks like some CNC skills may be needed at some point... for a final version at least...

of what? DIY Red Dragon meshwheel pumps... 1200-3000lph (thats air!) DIY pumps... easy... but the final product might be best if someone can convert the prototype volute(s) into CAD/CNC format so anyone can machine one on a CNC lathe.

Sorry to interrupt... just thought some of you might like to make $1000-2000 pumps for a little over $100 each...

Hahn that looks like a sweet project. We dont have a cnc lathe at work but I could probably do it on a manual lathe. If you want to give me some dimentions I can draw something up for you.

Big Bump

Well I finally got one of these dudes cut out! With lots of help from a friendly cnczoner - 10bulls. He is writing an open source CAD/CAM that is pretty user friendly and outputs usable gcode. Here are some pix

the wing missing in this pic is because my scrap pile is getting low and didnt want to break out the good stuff till i knew it was perfect

and here is the machine code for .25" thick acrylic using a 0.156 em
as always, run it thru a gcode backplotter to confirm before actually cutting it out.

Very nice. FWIW you can make those without having to use two pieces for the bottom by cutting the bearing mount off a slot cutter and grinding it flat. Takes adding another tool change but the results are worth the effort.

thanks, Don. i dont follow about the not having to use two pieces for the bottom though. how would it sandwich together? or you mean to machine the bottom part out of solid acrylic and use the slot cutter to remove the material from under the receiving part's wings?

Yes your just undercutting the wings with the slot cutter. Even if you dont want to redraw you can just lie to the machine.

thats what i was thinking, Don. wanted to say undercut but didnt know if that was the correct term.

its for a 3 inch, maybe 3.5 i cant remember. it was just some scrap tube i had laying around. will probably refine it and make a new ca rx with a twist lock lid and possibly build a kalk stirrer like dandy's awesome km500 clone. i was getting frustrated with these stupid ramps and kinda tabled it for a couple weeks. its still not cutting it the best way but it does work. i used an engrave mop to cut out the helices/ramps so its taking all the material away in one pass with 5 sweeps on each ramp to flesh it out. theres no way to set the depth increment using the software that i have. o well it works and quite well. the machine doesnt seem to mind cutting that much material in one pass but it leaves machining marks that have to be cleaned up with sandpaper. i did set z0 a little high and ran the code, then reset to to true 0 and re-ran the code. it cleaned it up alot but i can do it faster hand sanding than running it twice. my machine cut the part in about 6 min 30 secs.

Are you using mach3? Here is a overly redudant file that will get you what you need. I just copied and pasted three together but you can get the point, but works fine as is. This will cut right on the 4" radius line. So if you get rid of the redundant g20's you can change the g40's to 41's to get a tool radius offset.
This only cuts the ramps so make a quick 2d then cut the ramps.

I am finally getting closer. I got my electronics the other day and they are all wired up. About the only thing I have left is my drive screws turned down and the motors mounted up.

Here is a simple example of how to change a simple dxf to make ramps on a second goround. No cam needed, just mach3 and lazy cam. See notes in ( ). Dont try to cut it, its 8.25", my eyes wouldnt focus when I was drawing this so I made it big.

doesnt look like enough code to cut ramps, to me. maybe im not understanding what its for...in my backplotter it looks like the twist key but doesnt have any ramps, just little wedges at the tips of the "wings".

heres my latest cnc project pretty near completion

props to dandy7200 for the inspiration! he built his by hand!

In mach 3 this line N55 G3 X2.0625 Y3.6974 I-4.1250 J0.0000 Z-.1250 starts at .01 tapers down through the entire lenght of the cut until it reaches .1250 at the end the z rapids back to .01 and so on. The above are just example of how to change a basic dxf file without using a real cam application.

Load this into mach 3 and watch the z after it cuts the outside. In the tool table Set T1 to 1/4" diameter and T3 to 1/16" diameter. Enable tool change Macros. This will give you a 3/16 "wing" using just the 1/4 mill.
