If you can find one that's been alive in captivity for a couple of years, they are very easy. Otherwise, forget about them. There is some sort of disease these guys get on import that'll kill 'em in six months.

That's exactly it..."they have to be fed meaty foods and that's where most reefers go wrong." They eat just as much as anemone's and they have to be fed... silversides, krill, clams, mussels and anything that is loaded with protein at least a couple times a week.

silvers--

Some very sad reading:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=310425&highlight=elegance+coral

http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic31...light=elegence

http://www.projectdibs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=955

From what I can gather, here is Eric's summary of the problem:

Quote:
The antibiotic does not "cure" the problem. I have yet to have a single success using that method. That said, it does appear to me that the problem is bacteria aggregates in the tissue (not external) that also seem to cause granulation and disintegration of the nematocysts. There is a possibly secondary factor that is affecting zooxanthellae. I do not know what its role is as it is not in every sample.

I have had the one in the first pic for about 4 years. The pink tipped for about 2 and the one in the last for about a year. I have two more (not pictured) for about a year as well. I believe that a healthy specimen from the get go is key. I subscribe to the thought that a pathogenic bacterium is the cultprit as "Umm fish" pointed out. From what I have found these corals are very tolerant and adapt to many lighting and water quality parameters.
As the other guys mentioned, I feed mine as well. If a coral has tentacles shouldn't it be fed? They have them for a reason!

Personally, I am not getting another for quite awhile unless I can find one that has been in captivity for awhile. It is hard not too because they are awesome corals. Mine did not do well at all.

There are plenty of purple tipped ones in the uk but IMO oppinion the first imported ones pakotas are not as strong as the true jardineis, iv now found that they look a lot healthier if you feed the tank and not the cat direct, let them grab whats in the water, thats why they have sticky tentacles
hope that is of some help.

my aussie elegance, collected by registered collectors about 3 hrs from where i am.. mother colony is the size of a car!

heres its size in a 3ft tank. its base skeleton is approx 5 inches, it expands up to 30cm altogether, sometimes larger.

its extremely healthy and some parts of it have 2 mouths, it sits in an extremely low flow area, it seems to enjoy it more.

i feed it a mix of brine/frozen foods every few days.
