Crushed coral AND live sand
Just wondering if anyone has ever tried using both.

yup I have. I think I used more crushed coral than I did live sand, but you know once you add the live sand it seeds your crushed coral so your entire sandbed becomes "Live"

My father swears by that combo in his DSB. The way he looks at it the crushed coral allows pockets for the pods and such to make there homes. I must admit I see far more life in his sand bed than I do in mine. Of coarse his tank is going on 5 yrs old and mine hasn't had a birthday yet.

RC gave me a lot of reasons why this wouldn't work. Mostly stemming from the idea that the crushed coral would one day work it's way to the top and would eventually start to kill the sand bed. It was kind of hard for me to believe, but when I posted about it, I recieved almost 100% of people saying don't mix the two substrates, so I didn't.
Personally, I kind of saw it the way Joshua's father saw it. It just seems like the CC would make many more pockets for things like pods to grow and thrive in, especially if the sand was placed on top of the CC. Personally I think it would work, but I also know what I've heard on this site before. Good luck with whatever you decide.
