male or female

Hi every one

I was hopping some one can confirm what sex is my Hawaiian Dragon eel is , he is about 17" long

some one has told me if he is brown he is a male, as you can see he has brown stripes and his tail has a lot of brown.

i was hopping to find him a mate for company, I always had the idea of having a pair, i am able to get the other one now.

thanks for reading

Now if you got those things to breed...there's one of the several "holy grails" of marine fish breeding!!! I'm all for going for a pair - good luck!

I wouldn't think you should trust a dealer to know if a fish they have is female. I would get on a list with several vendors and have pics emailed to me when someone gets one in to verify the sex. If you didn't know for sure if your eel was a male, I wouldn't be sure a retailer would know a female. Just a thought.

Talking it's a male

I got a crazy thought this weekend and called the store I got the eel from and asked them if they new what they sold me, they told me it was a male and could try to get me the female or a pair. if a pair then we would talk about the one I have already gotten from them.
I think that would be the safes way to go so I am give them a chance to see if they can come threw with either a pair or that female.

Talking I just got my female

Hi every one

I can finally relax my female has arrived and it is a female, the place i got it from sounded like they knew what they where talking about and they did.

I took off from work when I got the call that my box arrived,
her water was 68*F degrees, I put her in a bucket with the same water and put a air stone in the water, that alone is bringing the water temp up. I covered her and will wait till after work to put her in the temp tank, I put a divider in the 55 temp tank I have the male in, I will let them look at each other for a day and put them in their permanent tank I built for them that has been running now for a month. I will keep a eye on them all night if I have to it will be Friday night any way .

I will post pictures tomorrow

Hi every one

their she is

and the happy couple I hope

she is about 3 inches longer then him, as you can see she is waiting for food already and had no problem eat the prawn I gave her( should i be peeling the prawns ???). not like the male, I have a hard time feeding him dead things, just shakes it a bit and leaves it but I want both of them full before I put them together, I will have to feed him live food tonight just to make sure he eats.

I don’t know what would of happen if I would of put them straight together , when he seen her thru the divider he went straight at her till he hit the divider, the big question is mmmmmm would of he just went straight at her and bit her or was he going over to say hi we shall never know. at this point as you can see they don’t really care about each other they just want food.

we will find out tonight or tomorrow , I want to have the time to sit their for a long wile.

thank for reading

Hi every one

well they are in their tank. scarry at first they where very active when I put them in. lots of stair downs but no one bit any one,
I thought if any thing was going to happen it was going to be on that first night. but no they did good and was ready to eat in the morning.

I pulled a couple of rocks out to give them a bit more room.

they both seem to be happy, they are eating alot. they seem like they want to eat all the time, I am feeding them twice a day at the moment once at lunch and one before the lights go out.

is that to much?? how offen should i feed them ?

thanks
Jose

I think that they will enjoy the security of some pvc pipe. Every eel I've seen has. The biggest problem I have had with eels is escape from even the smallest opening in the lid. Always at night. They sometimes fight at feeding time. They have horrible vision but a great sense of smell. He most likely rushed over just to see what you put in his tank. Good luck and keep us up to date!

would the eels be ok ?

water quality is no different in both tanks, they are both on one system.
