A lot of people think that if they just get the latest greatest equipment their pictures will be great. Well, great equipment makes a huge difference but there are a lot of variables (aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc.) and the more you know the better your pics will be. Taking a lot of practice pics helps immensely. This thread has tons of links to articles and tutorials. If you learn the basics and practice your pics will improve a lot. Posting pictures will help others figure out how you can improve them too.

hello fellow d50 owner,
On my list of things to buy for myself is thom hogan's D50 guide. I have heard nothing but great things about it, and at 616 pages, he is quite thorough! hth, Matt

Having better gear just means that you can't blame it on the gear for bad photos. I'd take a look at the link that Greg linked above for ways to improve your technique.
But if you're looking for gear, any of the micro lens will work well. I don't shoot much SW stuff nowadays, but here's one off of the 105mm VR micro lens.

lenses make a huge difference for Aquarium pictures. with that large of an FStop. lots of light with a quick shutter speed, enable low ISO's and it dosent get any better than what he just posted. those are nice-super-nice lenses.
