Question Sump ?s

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, I have decided I want to take down my 20L frag tank and use it as a sump for my 46. The problem is I have no experiance using a sump and my tank is not RR. I know I need a HOB overflow but how do they work and what kind of pump do I need for one. I have a mag7 can I use that? Does anyone have a HOB overflow for sale or trade?

Thanks

I just sold mine through RC, sorry.

Regarding the pump...I believe that you can use any pump as long as you are not moving a greater volme into your display than the overflow can carry away.

So, if the overflow box is rated to handle 600gph...use a return pump that is rated for less than 600gph.

Hey I got mine from Fosters and Smith and when I did I bought a Water Lifter Pump to go with it....it pulls air out of the HOB box to prevent loss of suction....it sure saves on headaches !

UH_OH_5_OH, I hope that you didn't buy a CPR overflow. They have been know to either loose their prime or become clogged easily. And you know what happens then.........water everywhere!!!

46 gallon isn't impossible to drain, drill, and get back going again all in the same afternoon.

depending on the stand, its gonna be a choir to get it in their, long story short, my dad used 10g tank while i was gone for a sump, and i kept using it till i moved, worked really well.

46 bows have a tempered bottom, but you could drill the back towards the top. you could even do this with the tank mostly full...

to go along with what humbugy said, you won't fit a 20L under a 46 bow unless you've made a custom stand to make it work. a 10g is all i could fit.

What's your technique for drilling a verticle plane of glass?
How do you keep the bit/glass interface lubricated? Or is this that critical?
Tape the inside to control debris?

Inquiring minds want to know. And so do I.

This may answer a few of your questions on drilling:

http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=603816

First he shows drilling horizontally, he also goes on to drilling vertically.

I concur on the drilling. If you can drill do it. HOBs are one more link in the chain that can be a potential flood. Some are more reliable than others, but if it was me, I would just drill it and be done with it.
