I've been following your thread since my wife gave me a 30 gallon aquarium a few weeks back (I still haven't even started to set mine up).

I just wanted to thank you for posting such a detailed account of your trials to date with setting up your tank. It really has given me some direction with how to set everything up.

just got my seio 1100 awesome flow in the 29g now.ive got the 620 on 1 side and the 1100 on the otherside.ive got the 1100 on a timer on/off every 15min its working good. Those tunzes are really nice and i like that they are black but for the best bang 4 its buck these seios do the job pretty well.

You gotta get rid of that silica sand and get some aragonite.
It will make a HUGE improvement. JMO.

Whats wrong with the silica?? Is it bad in an aesthitic, chemical, or some other way?? Or is it the myth about silicates and nitrates. I have read articles that disprove this.
