My late Christmas present. They fumigated the school and my fish tank!

Well, someone dropped the ball and failed to let me know they were going to fumigate the school (including all classrooms) for bugs. Wouldn't you know my 65g SW tank happens to be in my classroom with various livestock/corals, etc.

This took place on Thursday and we aren't allowed back until Jan 1.

What are the odds everything is dead in my tank?

(The stand is open in the bottom back with a fan blowing over the sump).

May your tank rest in peace. The chances of it surviving a fumigation without being sealed is very slim. Be sure to get the name of the guy who authorized it befoe you "kick A".

Did they fumigate or just spray for bugs..like around the walls and such? I'm thinking fumigation is a little extreme and would require everything to be removed from the classrooms as residual pesticide would come in contact with the children (desks etc).

If in fact they just sprayed for bugs I say your chances are good to walk in to everything being fine on Jan 1. Most of the pesticides in use today are not as nasty as a few years back. Most are water soluable and not dangerous once dry. So unless they spray the stuff directly in the tank you might have a great new year!

Just an eternal optimist here, wishing you the best.

Hiya Polcat!

I was told two different methods were used. One being spraying along the wall/floor AND bombing. They know that they sprayed in my classroom, but they weren't sure if my classroom was one that was bombed (fingers crossed they didn't).

I'll post back tomorrow when I go to check it out.

Happy New Year!

Is your classroom in Japan? They should know better than to bomb sushi LOL.

I hope it turns out OK, if you have some limited damage I guess be prepared for some large WC's; maybe that can be a classroom project. Not trying to be a wise guy but I've set up several classroom fish tanks and the kids get real attached and involved. In the very worst case they could learn the environmental consequences of pesticide use on the worlds eco systems.

Happy New Year to you as well!

PS cool race car.....

Oh! Well it turned out I had to wait another day before I could get into the school.

And now a word from our sponsor... (to add suspense)

Everything was amazingly OK! I did a 20% water change anyways and things look good. I thought for sure the room would smell like chemicals, but I didn't smell a thing. (I also have suspicions of government contracts and the shotty level of integrity. I'd be surprised if they fumigated anything by the looks of things!)

I teach at Yokota West Elem School here in Japan. I went to MW too. Class of '95.

Thanks for the support all! I'll see if I can snap some pics in the next few days.
