The clear favorites from reading this thread so far (and I'd agree) would be Modern Pet Center near Ala Moana and Coral Fish Hawaii in Aiea.

Modern Pets clearly has the best quality fish I have seen so far.

Pets Plus looked dismal, as did Pet's Discount Warehouse.

The Coral Reef has a large selection, but I have heard a few stories about thier mortality rate, since they are a wholesaler.

I'm a fan of both Modern Pet and Coral Fish. Coral Fish usually has better prices, but Modern Pet has a better variety of fish IMHO.

True, Modern Pets selection was quite varied.

Heh. Did you find Young's, Don? Lemme know if you need directions.

Maybe we should do the next one at the beach so we can go snorkeling/invert spotting together. BBQ with hibachis on the beach?

Just wanted to say that I envy you Hawaiian Reefers. Someday I hope to move to Hawaii. Your state is my paradise. I try to visit as much as I can afford.

Good luck to you all.

Are we going to have time to do one before January? I think people are too busy right now with family gatherings and whatnot .... so we're probably looking at January?

Which beach appeals to you all for the BBQ? If we want good snorkeling, it does sort of limit things - we could do Kahala Beach (not much parking), Shark's Cove (don't know if they have any BBQ facilities), Ala Moana/Magic Island (crowded) ... any other ideas?

I think Sharks Cove is just to rough this time of year to plan anything. Diamond head beach?

There is a really good spot past daimond head beach, right near the entrance of the the golf couse they have the sony open at. It has pre positioned BBQ's so all you need is wood or coal and the food. It would be hell in high winds and the snorkeling sucks but its an ok beach all together.

I'm pretty sure that's Kahala Beach (some people call it Waialae Beach Park). Yeah, snorkeling is "interesting" in the area though I have seen occ. corals in the area (lagoon environment).

Does Diamond Head have BBQ facilties? Don't recall any off hand. But then again, haven't been there in a while.

If anyone is interested I'm going to be selling my tank setup. You can see the build and final build here:

http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=707872

http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=428898

The tank has only been up for a couple months and everything is running like a clock, no leaks, noises, etc. The tank is a 37 gal Oceanic cube with Oceanic stand. The sump is a custom made 20 gal with Phosban reactor and Minijet 606 pump. The skimmer is a EuroReef CS8-1 with Sedra 5000, the return pumps are a Mag 9.5 and a Mag 7, the top off pump is a Mag 3, the chiller is a PCI 1/10 hp with updated controller, the over flow is a LifeReef with durso, the Sea Swirl is the 3/4" model. The lights is Hamilton, it has two VHO's and two 175w Metal Halide's (although I'm running only one), it includes two cooling fans and one moonlight. I'll include a new 14k Hamilton bulb and two new VHO bulbs, one 50/50 and one actinic. You can also have my five stage RODI unit, used for only a month for top off (I was using NSW in the tank). I'm asking $1k for the whole thing. I spent over $4k in total. Absolutely no emblems will be sold, you can patch the mounting holes if you like. The tank location is Honolulu, you haul. Send me a pm if interested, serious only.

Getting out bud. Thanks for asking. No time, so I'm selling it dirt cheap.

Snap-on - dang, I'd buy it myself if I was in the market for a tank right now - the better half would KILL me though if I brought another tank into the house. Sorry to see you getting out of the hobby though - your tank was SICK! I'm just bummed that I never got to see it filled. I'll check with some friends if any interest as well in buying the tank ...

Seth - I'd be OK with either. Don - what do you think? It could be more casual this time around - just to get together without food.

jimbo - good to see you around still!

Hey guys I'll be in Hawaii at the end of Feb. to visit my grandparents on Kauai (Poipu). Before we get to Kauai we will be stopping off in Honolulu for 3 days to see Pearl Harbor. Do any of you have any recommendations for what I should do/see while in the islands? I would definately like to go to a LFS or something.

TIA

Modern pet near Ala Moana shopping center is probably the best shop in the island 808-949-4916. If you have never been Hanauma bay is pretty nice.

Pactrop's right. Modern Pets has the best looking fish on the island. Coral Reef (or is it fish?) has a huge selection, but they are wholesalers and deal in quantity, not quality.

I'd have to say, though, that compared to some of the big aquarium stores on the mainland, Modern Pet is going to pale in comparison ...
