I made a HOB closed loop system before and used it on a fully stocked tank after like an hour. Well, when I woke up everything was dead. I'd have to say that if your tank has livestock, better to give it time

I'd have to say you had other issues of some kind, I've used freshly glued PVC within minutes in a fully stocked reef any never had problems, There was a guy a couple years ago that knocked the whole can upside down on the sandbed of his reef tank and lost nothing.
I do wash all my PVC before use, I've gotten it a few times and it was contaminated with an oily substance from a couple different suppliers.

I always use primer when gluing and I wait about an hour or so but as my post above says, I've used it within minutes in and emergency and had no problems.
