Here's a fun one...
...a friend of mine just picked up this 6" specimen from a wholesaler.
I have not seen it in person yet, but I asked for a pic after he was describing it to me. It was listed as a squamosa. Black and white line pattern. The mantles shape, curves, and extension are typical of a squamosa, but I've only really seen that type of pattern on derasa. Thought that was pretty neat

That would be a great clam to have. I really like the pattern on the mantle. Good find.....

Of all the clams, I like the squammies and maximas best, due to the variation in the mantle pattern and coloration. To me, all croceas look similar, if not the same- same with derasas.
Go ahead, critter, post some pics of croceas that look atypical... |

Maximas are still number one for me
Would like to see another pic of the first clam above

If you take a look at the links near the top left on my photo site, you can find a lot of pics of each species filed under clams (http://www.picsbase.com/james/default.asp?catID=82). Quite a few are from Indonesian waters, and many are from a clam farm there - so you get to see several unusual ones that we don't get over here. They told me that all the best stuff goes to Europe and Japan - they pay more. You've proabably heard that before, and unfortunately it's true...

i knew it!!! critter, you have probably seen more variation in clams than anyone else, but do you agree, MOST croceas appear similar. Beautiful nonetheless, but usually that vivid blue only.

I agree somewhat, as the majority of croceas are a drab blue or purple. There are some gems out there. Although rare, finding one with multiple patterns and contrasting colors makes it all the more special.
Nothing beats a maxima, though

"MOST croceas appear similar"
Most that we see in the US. There are occasional greens and golds though, and a few others - but yes, I'd say the vast majority that we get over here are predominantly blue... |

Well, I just picked up 21 t.corcea clams from Vietnam and they are mostly gold/greenish super grade, vibrant greens, and some nicley patterned blues. I got about 4 that were kinda plain, no pattern other than the outer edge, wife says it looks like lace- does I guess,LOL. All are at least 5 1/2", 2 are in the 7" range and I did get 1 12" Orange squamosa, pumkin is her name. Still freakin out. I get a pic when the wife gets off work,I ( a computer inforamtion science degree holder) can't figure out the camera/computer factor. Beautiful clams all, always want what you all have.
