Heating a large tank

I have a newly setup 180 with a 33 gal sump/fuge. I'm heating it with a couple of 250w heaters, but they seem to struggle at times. Soon I will convert to a 90 gallon remote sump/fuge which will add even more water to heat. What do you guys use/recommend for heaters? Thanks

My sump shares the room with my snakes which is heated to about 78-80. However, even that drops temps at night. I am running 2x 250W through a single controller. They struggle a bit but usually only run at night when the lights are off. Probably will end up adding another 250W somewhere down the line.

So 250s are the standard, just add more to keep it steady? Or do they make biger than 250w heaters? My remote sump is going to be in the garage and my biggest problem will be too much heat (chiller), but it can get quite cold here at night in the winter (30s-40s). Thanks S-man

2 x 300's and 2 x 100's for back up. All are in the refugium. I have to pump the water 100' + so I run mine a little bit on the high side. If to warm it runs thru the chiller right before entering the display tank.

you know the 300 watt heater in my 600 has never been on. I have the tank and sump in the basement. I dont know why but by the time the temp drops I guess the lights must come on and heat it back up. Now my 180 heater ran at times, but maybe a large body of water is just more stabil?

I was running 800w Titanum from Finnex but it was defective..and the controller fell in the sump (oops) So right now i'm running a 500w which is struggling, I have a couple 300w I plan to add, but my sump is in my garage which gets into the teens in the winter. I also wrappd my sump with insulation.

Steve, how much are you asking?

Mammoth: does the insulation help? I was planning to use styrofoam on all 4 sides and the bottom. Plus make some kind of styro cover for the winter.

I'm asking $150 each......they're a great heater that has served me well over the years. It's a flow through heater....so, you'll need a pump to push water through it. The ends of the heater are 1" fittings.

I heat my tank with 6- 400 watt metal halides, and 7 -250 watt metal halides. I also built a separate zone into the room with a wall thermostat running in-floor radiant heat in case the room temperature ever drops. I've never had to use it. I also have 2- 300 watt heaters which sometimes come on briefly but really the lights do all my heating. Cooling is the main problem.

I will either update it in the next few months...but, photo shooting an entire new website is a hassle......or....I will just shut the site down. I haven't decided yet.

Yes, without a doubt I sealed my whole RK2 bin sump with 2" insulation and made a lid for it.

Aqua Medic has Ti heaters up to 1000w that can be used with any controller rated for them or you can use the BioTherm controller that Aqua Medic sells.
