Nice tank and set-up.

What happens if/when the filter socks start to clog and reduce flow,is there a bypass that I can't see?

As long as you're collecting tangs , collect a Gem tang.

If the filter socks start to reduce flow I have a air valve on my overflow that restricts air flow and increases water flow. Once the socks get to clogged (about 5 days) then I replace with ones I just cleaned.

If you have about $2k that I can have then I would get a Gem Tang!!!

Just to let ya know about my tank its a 170 with dual 400's 14K BB EUro Reef CS 250 with the dual pumps, I usally siphon out the crap in the bottom that is being accumulated from the fish. I usally take out about 5 gallons of crap in the water filter it out and put the tank water back in to the main display.

So that is why im stopping my self from going to the sand. I used to have a sand bed in my 280 and others. I find to with my tank im hardy cleaning the glass with the hammer head float with coarser sand is it nay better I thought about 1.5-2 " bed.

mike
Yes, I have the crushed coral. I have a deep sand bed in one of my sumps. I like the crushed coral, about 1-1/2" to 2". I really have never cleaned the sand. I am letting it take its course, while adding a lot of flow to keep things suspended.

I do plan on LOTS of wrasses in teh future!

I have a dreaded aiptasia trying to burn some polyps. I shot it with vinegar and haven't seen it for more than a day.

Yes. The ones I have had in the past have been terrible theives. Tormenting the LPS when they catch food.

That is the biggest reason I do not have any in the tank now.

They steal food, but I don't think they will eat LPS or Zoas.

How about a picture of you (or anyone) standing next to it so we can get a perspective on how BIG this tank really is?

AcroSteve: I think all shrimp are "theives" but based on my research they also kill small animals and other shrimp. Anyone have a comment on that?

Well, I am no expert on them, but I have had several peppermint shrimp along with a coral banded and some cleaners and never had any problems with them. The coral banded may be questionable, but i never notivced any damage from him. The peppermints stole a little food, but never bothered any corals or other critters. Maybe a few pods but who knows on that one. I had more problems with the fish going after the shrimp than anything.

Just went through this whole thread and all I can say is WOW (can't believe I didn't notice it before). The setup looks very clean and I love those big sumps. The aquascaping looks great. You have clearly taken your time to plan this one out and spent considerable time setting it up. I can't wait to have a large tank with its own room... I may have to come visit one day to steal some ideas
