BTA Question

What's the safest way to detach a BTA from a rock?

move the rock to a place it doesn't like and it will detach itself.

I second that.. Some say pointing a powerhead right at the foot of the anemone he will not like it and detach.. Thats the best way to go about doing it..

you can use that same method for pesky mushrooms.

Well I must be a cowboy, I just get in with my fingernail and peel a little bit of foot back, once there is enough to get my finger in underneath, the rest can be gently worked off, main thing is don't rush take it easy.

someone on another forum also said covering them up (devoid of light) will get them to detach.. Has anyone used this method?

i am not saying you can't do it this way but it is also the easiest way to damage the foot wich will basicly kill the anemone. stick with the powerhead method.

can you move the rock hes on? Even if you need to do a little rearranging that would be the best bet IMO

Use caution! He may not like where you put him and move somewhere else

Yes, if you detach it & move it somewhere else, it is almost guaranteed to go walkabout. Chances are much better it will stay put if you can move the whole rock.

by the way, is there a trick to getting my O. clowns to host with it? Or is it just a waiting game?

Ocelaris clowns do not naturally host in BTA's, they may need some encouragement, specially if they are tank raised and have never even seen an anemone.
What I did, the clowns had a little corner which was their "turf". I moved the anemone right by it, so they brushed against it naturally and after a week or so they figured it out.
To move the anemone, I moved the whole rock, and positioned him so the current & light was exactly the same as where it came from, probably didn't even know he'd been moved, so no issues with him wandering off.

If you did really want to move the anemone you could always try taking a piece of frozen food and gently rub the foot of the anemone. The cold from the food will cause the foot to contract.
I've done this dozens of times and have never damaged an anemone, however, the easiest way is to just move the rock

It will probably happen eventually anyway. But perhaps you could place a rock or two so they are crowded a little closer to the anemone. Just don't overdo it and make them move somewhere else.

Here is a pic of my two in their BTA, it did take them six months before they moved in, and even then I doubt it would have happened if I did not move the anemone. They have now been in it around five years.

i heard that putting a picture of clowns hosting in an anemone so the clowns will see encourages then to host an anemone faster.
