Steve Tyree is a household name in the coral industry and has been since 1993. He has written books and is known for his farming of stony corals. He also has many limited edition corals that can be purchased, however, usually the waiting is a few years to get a frag of one of his corals.

Im seeing so many of these Aquacultured Supermans available from different wholesalers and Im trying to figure out if they are TRUE DANAE or some weird encrusting montipora...

the TRUE supermans have that bumpy texture right? VS the other kind that is purple and redish has a smooth texture.

thanks for the info parrothead.

I figured as much but wanted clarification. Thanks for clearing that up! How does one go about getting his frags? I am not ready to purchase such nice pieces as I am still learning I am just curious. I know that atlantis appears to have some of them for sale but they all say unavailable.

Actually GeeGee the tyree website is
http://www.dynamicecomorphology.com/
Also check out this.
http://www.frags.org/keywordsearch.p...archmethod=any
You dont always have to get your frags from a big website. I personally like frags.org myself. But you cant always see what your gettin beforehand.

I don't fall into the "true" or "first" editions of any coral. What matters to me is the science behind it. The colors are just an added bonus. Here is some good information on ]Montipora danae

Montipora danae corallite detail

i think that the true monty superman is a monastereata not danae.l i have aquired 3 montys with the blue base red polyps since we started our lfs and here are my findings.the first monty i got was a semi smooth/slightly bumpy species that seems a little harder to get to color up than the others i have gotten i dont know the species but it was a (encrusting/plating )type .the second species i got in is my personal favrite its m.orientalis(i think but am no scientist)its got thousands of tiny polyps and the base is very smooth(its also and encrusting type)but the blue on this coral is SMOKING its so freaking dark neon plugged in BLUE!!the third i have gotten in is i think the m.monastereata.it hasa bumpy coenosteum (base) i beleive its the one that everyone calls the danae. i have only had it out of the wild or the wholesaler for about 3 or 4 weeks and its color is coming along nicely the polyps are a bright orange and the base is a nice baby blue and getting brighter by the day.i have never ever seen a monty with the superman colors that has a coenosteum that is even close to a danae just my opinon.i still have all of these montys to compare to each other all in all they are really nice corals imo.anyone have similar findings?or not so similar?i will try to get pics of all 3 and post here soon!

Come to think of it, it could possibly be something along the lines of M. mollis.

cool - i hope so too, color shifts can be scarey you never know which way they will go.
i have a frag of each in each of my tanks one under 14K and one under 10k - i have 7 encrusters/plates in all(4 of which are "wild" caught, 3 captives) and i'm really curious what effect spectrum will have on base/polyp coloration especially in the wilds but it will be months before i know anything
- has anyone out there done any REAL experimentation on different lighting schemes ie put a frag of the same colony of these wild caughts under say 20K and 10K and is at least 6 months in to it??

monkeybone what color were the polyps originally?
