Did you know... (Identity theft)

Did you know that if you go to a restaurwant and hand you credit/debit card to the server that they can write all the info down, open up a paypal account under your name, and start buying stuff?

Did you know that as long as they don't charge more than $1,000 they will not ever get investigated or prosecuted?

Did you know that if somebody opens a paypal account under your name that you are not entitle to the information on that account, despite the fact that it is your name and your card, without a subpoena?

Should we use cash only at restauraunts then ?

I think most crooks would use one of those portable credit card swipe instead of writing them down, etc.

I like the pay pal purchase reciept scams that get spammed to my account. If you havent seen this it goes something like this.
You get a Pay Pal reciept for a purchase say a cell phone (Just one I got) the new Razor phone total with shipping was $300 and some change. Email looks exactly like one Pay Pal sends out for a legit purchase. At the bottom is a flashy buttom that says dispute this charge. If your not savy you may take that link which sends you to a login screen for Pay Pal. This is a cloned page. By clicking on the link in the Email to dispute the charge you just fell into the trap. The dummy login page is collecting your username and password as you enter it in to login to your account. If ever you get one of these, close out the email login directly to Pay Pal and then check your account never use the link in the email or you just gave up your account information to who ever wants it. I never open a link from an email anyhow but for the unknowing this cold spell disaster.

Yep, it did happen. I been abused by PayPal and ripped off by some punk who tried to buy an X-Box on Ebay. I saw the charge before it cleared and contacted the seller... hopefully the kid never got the X-Box, but nobody seems to want to give me the email address or address on the account. I would so love to round-house kick some punk thief...

I did get my money back, but I am very angry about it still.

Bummer. Hope you can find out who it was. Or at least get paypal or ebay to file charges for fraud.

Check with the local authorties and maybe they can put pressure on paypal to give up the info so you can press charges against them.

Then after court, round house kick them as they are taken away to jail.

That's a risk you take anywhere, not just at restaurants. When I worked retail we swiped the card, the customer signs the receipt then it goes in the register next to the cash. It wouldn't take any slyness.

There was actually a kid at the local Pizza Hut who was doing just that. They got him, but I don't remember how much he charged. It doesn't take long to track someone down when all the victims were at the same place. Just a matter of who was on what shift each day.

Oh man that sux. I actually tracked my guy down to an Indonesian server. The name on the account was MR. Chinx. lol. I have some good friends that play in the shadows of the net that can find out anything about anyone. Its amazing what you dont know is going on behind the scenes. The net is like the wild west. Very easy to steal your I.D. if your not careful. I just wish they would up the anty on this kind of crime and make examples out of these people. Even if its international. The trouble now is the net is protected by national borders and laws so its hard to prosecute. Someone in China or Katmandu can be stealing from you in L.A. and you catch them by the time they trace it and locate the perp. They are long gone and or they have no guidelines to arrest them. Which makes it a perfect crime for the cyber thieves.

Did all of that. The bank doesn't care since Paypal reimbursed them. Paypal won't do anything since it's less than $1K... to expensive to investigate. Police won't issue the subpoena to PayPal to get the info since they're not going to prosecute. they figure that since I got my money back that it's "no harm, no foul".

The detective tells me that they just send the "possible point of compromise" list to the FBI who compiles and never does anything with it.

Bottom line, you get compromised, you get your money back if you are quick, but there ain't jack you can do about it.

I cant understand why you steal personal property over $100 its a misdemeanor larceny but you can steal $999.99 this way and they dont do squat. This is the kind of stuff that need to change.

It won't spoil my day. I'm taking off in a few minutes to go home so a Sears repairman can come and overcharge me to fix my dishwasher. I also need to get the insulation and drywall up in the bathroom so I can get the toilet installed before tomorrow...

The hits just keep rolling. And speaking of hits, it would make my day to be there when that karma rolls around on that jerk...

sucks that it happened to you, but for future reference.....

if you have a good credit card company that should not matter. hypothetically, if someone were to take my card and use it on paypal and buy a lot of stuff. all i would need to do is call my credit card company, file a claim and they would:

1. credit back all the funds (tentative credit)
2. investigate the claim
3. finalize the investigation
4. the credit is final

truthfully, i don't see all the worry about using credit cards. i use mine for any and all transactions as it is, imo, safer than using any other form of payment.

I used to prosecute "white collar crime" back in the day. I hate to say it but all that stuff lbrty9 is saying is true and it's not the exeption but the norm. Use cash in restaurants and in stores, be careful of online accounts and READ YOUR STATEMENTS EACH MONTH! You'd be surprised how many people have no idea what is going through on their credit cards, they just pay the balance, so long as the amount is not outrageous! The elderly are most suceptible. BEWARE!!!!

paypal can also freeze your account and any accounts attached to it if there is a suspicion of fraud or a dispute. For instance, if you have your checking acct attached to paypal, they can freeze the account while investigating - which could be god knows how long.

I don't like paypal. They are too shifty for me. Unfortuantely it's almost a necessity to use them.
