Got clams?

Just bought a small Dersa at the LFS for about 30 bucks. Seems to be doing OK. How often should I feed it and what? I feed my Bubble and Fungia pieces of Snapper twice a week. Will the Dersa eat this too? He's about 3" right now. He's on the substrate under 440 watts of VHO. Also in moderate current.

At 3" he should be safe just filtering nitrates and particles out of the water, but I would suggest dosing DT's every other day. It will only make everything in you're tank more happy. just my $.02.

How about Marine Snow and Black Powder? That's all I have for now.

BTW,
clams are filter feeders so they only eat stuff that for the most part, we can't see. it will not eat solid food and doesn't like anything solid to come into it, it will only purge it out.

If you do some searches on clams you will find a wealth of info on their care requirements.
For smaller clams feeding plankton is said to be nessecary to do.
For larger clams light provides them with most of their food/energy.

Anyway I will try to attach a pic of my ~ 8 inch dersa I recently aquired from a fellow reefer.

I see you have yours attached to a piece of live rock..how did you manage that? I tried to get mine to sit on a piece of l/r but he wouldn't stay.

I don't know actually. Most of the reasearch I have read says that it takes considerable time or at least some time I guess for it too attach.

I actually have three clams in my tank. I have two small Maxximas that I recieved a few weeks ago and they attached themselves in a few days with their threads.

This large dersa I got a few days ago and I was looking today and it has put out some threads to the rock it is sitting on in the pic. It has been on a sand bed up untill now.

So I don't really have an answer to your question except I made sure they were in a stable spot and hopefully didn't fall off.

IME, if your clam is over 3" just feed your tank and he will be fine.

Canadian Man, Very nice clams as well

Don't you just love this guys.

Yes I am thinking of turning my 180 over to a clam tank. That should be a project!
