sedra replacement/alternative

who here has used a different pump for their skimmers that would normally come with say the Sedra 3500 ? curious because mine took a crap on me and now im looking to replace it with either the same one or something else...

so, whats your alternative to the sedra 3500 powerhead?

I think u can plumb a gen x pump the submersible type. And might be able to run it external with gen x also.

Just stick to the sedras if you dont want to modd anything.

Wait is this for a skimmer? If so that sedra9000 would need to be for a recirculation only and youll need to feed the skimmer with a weaker pump. The Sedra9000 will make a water fountain out of your skimmer.

I had a GenX 2400 NW for a short while for a little DIY testing and the thing seemed to work really well. About half the price of a Sedra 5000 and pretty much a direct knock off.

If you still have the impellar, you could always look for the offbrand pond pump that sedra uses. Sedra uses a generic chinese made pond pump and relables it (but they claim that they have the factories re-tune the pumps or some BS). I think you can find them at harbor frieght (I found the equivalent to their 3500 model at HF a while ago) or other online stores for alot cheaper than paying sedra prices. Just compare the body style. I think via aqua uses the same pump as one of their series, and it might even be cheaper than the harbor frieght pumps.

It's a little bit of a problem because the outputs are a different size and the 5000 is taller than the 3500.

The Gen-X GX 1500 is the same pump as long as you still have a good needle wheel impeller.

Sen and Dolphin submersibles are the same pump as well, but I've never seen a 350 available.

if your impellor is still okay you can buy the generic WP33 pump,

http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/.../8787/cid/2142

and put your impellor in it, if not I would recomend an oceanrunner 3700.

Coral Oasis got me one in a few days for $less then 30.00. I have my old one which I sanded to make it round again it you can't wait. It works but does not restart consistently with it. Also use some fine wet dry paper to smooth out the bore it goes in if it is chewed up.

I had the same idea for my ASM G1. It didn't work. Maybe my model is a different brand/year than yours.

If your LFS deals with Sea Dwelling Creatures, SDC has the needle wheel impeller for your pump listed on their instock list.
