This is a 55 gallon with approx 50 gallons of water in it. I figured 1 ml per 20 gallons, but figured 3 ml was a good base to start with. I would do 1-1.5 ml. for your tank. 2 ml shouldn't kill anything either.....suprise us!

My 40 gallon tank I have here in my work room also is going to be tested. It's nitrates are off of the chart, like 200 ppm. I am going to do that tank also. I will give it 2 ml a day starting today.

Yes the water should get cloudy, its because the what the vodka does is, feed anerobic bacteria that break down nitrate and it makes your skimmer go crazy because it is slimming out all the excess bacteria. The reason why it gets cloudy is because there is so much bacteria being produced. Its perfectelyt normal It should clear up in a day or so unless you keep adding it, but when your nitrate hits zero you can slow the dosing down just to keep it under control.

first off when you guys say vodka you are talking about absolut or smirnoffs right?? if so what would be the benefit for a fish only tank besides reducing the nitrates? i was reading somehting about getting rid of hair algae ,does it get rid of it? and how drunk do the fish get?

Time will tell my friend. I am using Prestidge Vodkka, plastic 1.75L for $6.99. The cheapo stuff. I do not have nitrate sensitive fish or other livestock, I just want to see if it works. I figure this, the algae lives on excess nutrients, those turn into nitrates, if the vodka produces bacteria that eats the nitrates, then I shouldn't have any algae at the end. The 55 has massive amounts of brownish tan algae, some clumps are 2.5" long, I wonder if it will die off completely?

In my 135, I have to battle this red slime algae with some funky chemical, if I dose vodka, get my nitrates to zero, I should be able to conclude that my excess nutrients are being used up and leave me without this nasty red slime. What is the worst that can happen? It hasn't killed fish yet, so maybe I waste some cheap vodka......that will only **** off a hobo somewhere.

Danorth, What kind of skimmer and other filtration are you using on your experiment tanks? How much live rock? DSB?

A picture is worth 1000 words, so keep us posted with pictures of your progress on that hair algae.

The 55 has a generic canister filter, 40 lbs LR, bare bottom, prisim skimmer

40 gallon has some sand, 10 lbs LR, Emperor 400 and CPR skimmer with Rio 800.

I will take a close up tomorrow of a patch of the hair algae as the study subject. I will get nice and geeky making sure the camera is on the same setting, same zoom, same position/angle.....just as I would like if someone else was doing it. This should be pretty exciting if the hair algae goes away on its own! The 40 gallon is a different beast, there isn't any algae in there, but more nitrates than a circus hotdog! Odd. If both work, it is on to the home/prize tank (prize at least to me).

It is the 55, sunlight + no UV = rank....but only 30 ppm nitrate???! My home tank looks crystal clear and is soaring. Go figure.

Skimmer hasn't done anything unusual at all so far.

55 ~15ppm Has gone down
40 ~80-100 still, too red to really tell.

Dosing 3 ml in the 55 / 2 ml in the 40.

New pic of hairy rock in my gallery.

Hey up just thought i'd post this quickly before work, the vodka 1.25ml has been in 13.5 hours now.

But i could swear i am noticing a difference i had quite a bad case od black algae at the bottom of the tank and it is starting to break up quite noticeably, wish i'd posted a pic of it to start with, here is the pic which i took 5 mins ago

Alos this is my skimmer after 13.5 hours of vodka, sorry it's a bit cloudy but it was a quick one

So no really mad skimming yet will add the vodka again later and will also do my water check later as well and post results

Watch out, your skimmer will start to smell like rotting sewerage.
But just an update I have tested sugar and it works the same as vodka

Well for now, I will stay with the vodka, then switch later....

$$$ I am going with 1-1.5 ml per 20 gallons, every day, shot straight into the tank.
