Problem with new frag

Hello i just got a new frag at my last frag swap on sunday. I let it sit out in the air for about 5-10 minutes because of the method i have heard on here. Well i put it in the tank and yesterday and today i noticed that it looks like some of the tissue is coming off of the frag. But where the tissue is coming off it is not white more of a faded blueish grey color. Anyone know if the frag is going to make it?Thanks

Wow, I have never heard of the "let it sit in open air for 5-10 minutes method". What would be the benefit of that?

Some corals can withstand the tide going out etc. but i do not see what the benefit of doing this to a frag would be. Can someone shed some more light on this?

Sorry... as for your frag. Perfect water and tank parameters and try not to stress it out any more.

I feel compelled to write this so disregard if you already know...

When I introduce a new coral to my tank I first research as best as possible what kind of light/ tank positioning and water flow it likes. I acclimate the water temperature by placing the new coral into the tank in the bag it came in/ container/ or I put it in a ziplock and place into th tank. After about 25-35 minutes I mix in some water from my tank and reseal for about 5-10 minutes. Then i take out of bag and place directly into tank. I usually throw away the water the coral came in.

I also try and ask or see where the coral as been kept and for how long. Don't want to shock the coral with too much light depending where it came from.

I also have never heard of the leaving it out of water method...what does this accomplish again.... as for the coral sounds like early RTN to me.

letting it sit in the air lets it build a mucous coat which then protects it when you put it in the water without acclimating. that is my understanding of why it is done. I have done it many times after floating the bag, and so far no losses, i usually have pe within hours.

i should clarify by saying that ive done this with aquacultured sps and zoanthids only. i run my salinity at 1.026/7, and i buy alot from a store at 1.023. healthy corals are much more durable than we give them credit for. i drip acclimate fish for two hours before putting them in.

Twon has the theory right....

As far as the frag in this thread... we probably need more info...

Type of coral, Whaer is the frag losing tissue? (Base, tip, etc) Type of lighting and where in tank (also same question for the coral supplier's system)... Current intensity? Water temp and consistency.....

I mounted the coral on its side because i heard it gives better growth. But on its side it is losing the tissure starting at the end which would be the base. The frag is currently placed at the bottom of my tank in the sand bed on a reef plug until i move it into my final place in my tank (want to make sure they are ok before i permenatly place them).It is a standard 55g tank with a 250w 14k Hamilton SE bulb over the middle(will be putting in a second soon) with 2 110w VHOs. My water temp varies but no more then 2-3 degrees. I am not possitve about the supplier as it was at a frag swap. It is just an acropora they didnt know what it was either but after seein some picks on here i think it might be a purple monster because it had a purple base with green polyps. Thanks

It's been a couple days, I hope the coral is doing ok.

The coral very well might need to be fragged if the tissue is still receding. Cut the healthy tips away from the RTN'ing base. Give the coral good current as this will help fight RTN in my experience.

Hi DJ,
Did you get tha coral from Rob at the swap? He was in the back right corner of the swap with a blow up shark over his tank. You said it was purple with green polyps correct? Dan.

It looked to be the same thing but i got it from umm i cant remeber the name they were right buy salty next to zepplin i wanna say coral dynamics but i dont know

I have been thro all the algea blooms i think just got rid of the HA which wasnt bad at all the frags i have had are encrusting and growing good. I got corilline algea growing in my tank on the glass. the tank has been set up since january and everything is doing great i think.
