Great thread, but I have a quick question that I don't think was expectitly asked.
I'm getting 250g tank soon 96"l x 24"w x 25"h. Can I cover it with only 3 LAIII's and 400w MH bulbs? BTW I already have the ballasts. Has anybody else done this? Thanks, Jon............

My 225gl is 60Lx36Wx24H and I run 2 LAIII's with 250W bulbs and they cover the whole tank without a problem.

Just MHO but I think a 96L tank warrants a fourth MH and reflector. I run 3 over a 72" tank for full coverage, but I would end up with lower light gaps if I stretched them out further..
You can always plan to place lower light animals in those areas though.. I only keep SPS and want high light coverage across the whole tank. LPS and Softies would do fine. |

You also have factor how high you are going to place them.
The higher up you place them, the more spread, but a loss in intensity.

Is Pacific Garden Supply still the best & least expensive place to buy LA3's?
Also is the vented reflector w/glass shield worth the extra $$$?

I figure the PAR lost from the glass would be made up over time, meaning my current reflectors have water spray cooked into them and I clean them but they never look new again. My thought is that the glass shield would be much easier to clean so a year down the road the PAR would be the same, maybe better with less maintances by keeping the new shiney reflector protected from salt spray. Agree/Disagree?
Are the vents worth it & where is the best deal?

I'll post pics when they get here on Thursday, but each reflector is going to hold two bulbs, an Iwasaki and a Radium. Dan said he placed the moguls opposite of each other and lower in the reflector. He said the blend and spread was a very promising design. He talked about taking them to a show and calling them the dual mogul LAIII.

dang, that should be pretty cool. How high above the water are you going to place the reflector? It should cover a 3x3 veryvery well.

It's going to cover a 4'*4' area. May need to be 18"-22" off the water, but the tank is only 15" deep.

Will a single mongul cover 4' x 4' at 20" above the water and are you using 250w or 400w duals? Are you getting the vented reflector? Any pros/cons?

I have these lights over the tank now, but with different reflectors. They cover the area, but not evenly. The LAIII’s will do better. On one side of the tank I keep clams in the center and lps/softies around the edge. The other side is mostly sps. Instead of starting low in the tank and moving stuff up, I start stuff at the edge and move stuff in.
The halides are two 400's on each side of the tank, 4 in total (the tank is 8’*4’*15). I didn't go vented, but they will sit in a custom hood two feet off the tank built into the house with a bathroom fan at the top. This is all in my basement and currently my heater runs all the time, even with all my lights on, so I'm not too worried about heat. Not sure about pro's and con's. Just about everything about my tank is rather unique, so why not continue the trend. Marcus |

I just got them today. I'm planning to put them up on Saturday. I just have to figure out how I'm going to mount them.

#&*! .. I got brand new pendants from them I haven't used yet.. Could have gotten them made that way. That's a great idea. Is the reflector itself any bigger then the single moguls'?

It was kind of my idea. I needed reflectors to hold my radiums/iwasaki's and emailed PGS with the idea of a dual mogul LAIII. I origialy thought he would put them on the same side, but this should work out better. It's no bigger, just a custom drill on a blank reflector. I just wish he would name it after me.
PS, there is only 1 hole to put a screw through. One screw won't hold the whole reflector and two moguls will it? Also, any heat issues screwing it to wood? |

I had been day dreaming along the same lines, just never took the initiative to write or go visit them. Glad someone did, albeit too late for me lol
There's one hole on top but once you attach the sockets you should have three (each socket assembly has one hole on top). I used 1/4" bolts and some hex nuts to seperate the pendants from the wood I attached them to. |

You know, you probably wouldn't have trouble selling the ones you have if you want to buy some like mine.

Maybe not. Would want to get air cooled as mine are close to the surface.
Thanks again and can't wait to hear how you like 'em. Pics would be super cool. |

I am not likely to post pictures as the dual mogul LAIII was not a success. Putting a Iwasaki and a Radium in the reflector did not resulting a blend of the color but rather resulted in bad color striping. I’ll either be replacing the Iwasaki setup with another set of Radiums or go back to my old reflectors.

That stinks, hopefully your next combo will work out.
