How to make live rock pillar?
Hey,
For one of my tanks, I would like to construct a live rock pillar that would stand up, and be atleast 14-18" tall. It would go in my 15g high, which will soon be a seahorse tank. How should I go about makign a LR pillar? I would like for it to look like this: http://reefcentral.com/gallery/showp...t=1&thecat=500 Thanks, CJ |

You can either find a big piece of live rock that has the shape you need, I've seen a lot, however they can be pretty expensive. Second, find various pieces of liverock which connect together easily and use epoxy/glue to hold them together formy. Or, better yet, make a PVC structure and drill the liverock so it slides onto it, that way you can have a tall skinny pillar that is very firm and won't fall over. You can even do a combined method of all of these.

Thanks guys. 2 great articles.
I was trying to stay away from agrocrete rocks just becuase i didn't want to cure them. I think eggcrate would actually be better than PVc...might be able to get more flow through the pillar, plus it would give something for the seahorses to hitch on. I would just have to build a big rectangle, and make a big base for it. I have some extra eggcrate that I might mess around with tomorrow.

Rich, if you like those rocks I also build these out of cement over PVC. This one is 3' long.
and here it is under construction. |

That is amazing! I could just see it covered in Zoas or some other plating coral!

take an acrylic rod and drill holes in all your rocks and just stick them on the rod. just build it up to however high you want

With the acrylic rod, would I just use 1 large one and slide the drilled rocks over the rod...or would I use a bunch of short rods and conect them all together?
Also...pictures are very helpful if you have any. CJ

cj_basser, ive honestly never used the acrylic rod technique but ive read about a lot of people using it to hold their aquascape together. i think it would work either way. one big rod or a bunch of small rods connected.
