I'll trade you an "a" for that "e" so you don't have to send anything anywhere... ;-)

only joking... as to your question, you CAN mix sand from your local beach, but probably SHOULDN'T. There are far too many polutants in the sand found on the beaches near highly populated areas.

Now, if you lived on a remote island in the caribbean, you could probably get away with it.

If you're looking to save some money on sand, by some silica based play sand from HD or Lowes, or if you're lucky, your HD may carry south down which is aragonite based.

Don't worry about diatoms, i have roughly half the sand in my tank as silica based play sand, and I have no problems with diatom blooms other than the initial outbreak during the cycle that everyone has.

The only thing you may not like about that, is the silica sand does not match the nice, bright white color of the sand you'll buy at the LFS.

hth,

Matt (TVI)

I used 100 lbs of south down in my 90 and then 40 from my previous tank and the I brought back 2 large zip locks from Belmar Beach in NJ and haven't had a problem.

Re: Send bed...

You need to post in the furniture vendor's forum.

Sorry, I know you were already kidded once, but I just had to.
