A question for stand builders, and experienced people too

Hi, I presently have a 65 gallon (48"x18"x18") on my homemade stand, without problems for the past 8 years. I want to put a 75 gallon on the same stand (48"x18"wide x 21" high). I personally feel that the stand will hold up a truck, but I would like to be sure that I'm not making a mistake, thinking that it is much stronger than actual. It is all 4"x4" about 24" high by 48" long with monster 10" nails holding it all together. I not only have the 4x4 corner posts, but also in the center. So... will it hold the 75??

4x4, huh? Should easily hold a 75. I use 2x3s set next to eachother on the ends of the stand that hold my 75G. I also have another 2x3 in the middle of the font and the back. I'll see if I can find a pic.

I used 6 4x4 to build my stand and it holds a 100 gal with 200lbs of rocks.

It could probly hold 4-6 tanks befor you have a problem. Most stands are over built. The key is makeing them stiff so they dont twist and move. Go to a pet shop and look at the big manufacturers stands and you will see how light they are compared to most home built ones.

I have a 210 stand that has only 3/4 plywood for the vertical load.

You have 4x4's spanning less than 24". You are not going to have a problem with any vertical loads on that thing. If you have some sheathing to take care of the twisting/raking, you should be able to hold an elephant.

Well my friends that carried it up 3 flights of stairs we're quite vocal about how over built it was. Renting up stairs, I'm paranoid of one day comming home to a busted tank and thousands $ in damage. So I just thought I'd run it past you guys.
Thanks

You're talking about all of 80lbs additional load (in water) - spread out over the perimeter of the tank? A minimal load increase at best, no worries.

i have made a stand for a 300 out of 2x4's and its still a rock...you have no worries at all if you built it with a "conventional" framework...you could put a tank on it literally

According to my calculations your stand should hold well over 5000 pounds.

Most book shelves have more weight than fish tanks. Its just your perception of the weight.
