Pure white zo's
Went to my LFS for some frozen food tonight and just had to check out the coral tanks. I came across some snow white zo's, very cool looking. They are asking $65.00 for a rock with about 10-12 polyps. That seemed kind of high $ to me, but then again I have never seen all white zo's anywhere. Are they "rare"?

Porbably bleached. I had some that were pure pure white but I knew what color they were before hand. It took 2 months for them to recolor. Now I do have some pure white center zoos but not solid ones.

Something to consider. Especially at such a high price and only a few polyps.I agree with jay

I have a colony of pink zo's that all turned white under mh's. What is strange the colony is spreading from a few polyps to over 60 all white. I will keep you informed if they change back to pink

I can show you a picture but it won't be till next week. The ones I have are a pure pure white. I was hoping they would die. They were really ugly paly's. I ended up tweezing them but the ones I missed colored up. It took a long time though. They were cool looking. Too bad I am honest and didn't sell them as pure white zoos.

Interesting. I didn't realize zo's could bleach. I'm usually in the LFS once a week, so if they're not sold I'll keep an eye on them.

they can bleach from too much light or go completley clear from not getting enough. When I got my GPE they were completly clear and had no skirts what so ever.

Zoos can bleach for plenty of reasons. The most common in my tank is when a frag gets knocked in to a dark spot, like under my rockwork or in the back of the tank somewhere. When I eventually find it it's usually way lighter than the actual color. I had one that I mistakenly left in my overflow box while moving stuff around. When I found it a month later it was all white with a yellow skirt. Looked cool, but after a week or two it colored back up. I've never seen an a naturally all white zoo, or any coral that was naturally pure white. Wouldn't make sense really since it would lack any zooanthellae.

They look sort of green in the center. I still really don't think there are pure white zoos. Just a note and I could be wrong, but my zoos looked similiar to dr mac's when they were bleached really bad. Let us know if they remain the same color in 2 months.

I was out of town about a year ago and went into a local fish store and saw white palyathoas. They looked really good and I'd never seen whites so I bought them and took them on the plane home. Turns out that though they looked great, they apparently were bleached because now, they're a boring shade of green.

I went snorkling about 2 weeks ago and the zoa's in my usual spot where all bright white instead of the usual brown and green. So I picked some and they are on their way to turning brown and green, I wonder what bleached them in the ocean?

I guess this all means that people really want all white...pure white zoanthids, though there doesn't seem to be such a thing.

There was a lot of talk about showing pics of white/bleached zoas. The zoas on the left were in a dark tank with no lights for 2months. They survived fine but look white right now. When they color up they will look like the zoas on the right.

Zoas with white centers are pretty common. I agree with everyone who says there are no pure white zoanthids which are not bleached. The ones ficklefins posted above are a good example of completely bleached zoas.
