Question clown laying in bottom....rapid breathing

My clownfish which we have had for about 3 weeks is jusy laying on the bottom and breathing pretty rapidly. We added a new clownfish about a week ago and he is doing just fine. The clown has no marks on his body and his coloring is just a little pale. The new clown seems to be protecting him. He was doing just fine until about 2 days ago......any suggestions?? Also he is not eating too well lately either.

Man, this doesn't sound good....do you have a QT you could put him in so that he is more isolated? Might also want to post this in the fish forum. Either way, you deserve a bump.
Good luck,
Ari

I think you should QT him. Maybe he is stressed, getting picked on, or had something wrong with him. Put him in alone with some rock to hide behind, and give him some stress tx. This is just MO however, I would love it if someone else popped in and gave an opinion. But if we chat at least it gets bumped.

Thanks for the input.....but (stupidly) I dont have a QT tank set up, so I think my options are slim....the funny thing is that he was fine for weeks and now this, also he has no sign of distress...no torn fins, no spots or marks on him. Its strange!!

I would give them BOTH a formalin bath, assuming all your tank parameters are good...http://www.petsforum.com/personal/tr...s/default.html

Is the other fish doing fine?
My fish sometimes breath rapidly when not enough oxygen in water, they tends to stick to water surface, so I just use a powerhead to target the water surface to get more oxygen into the water, and they will beome normal.

doesnt look like there is anything wrong with him. you could try the formalin bath as suggested, however i cant answer your question on where to get it. is the newest clown (the one that is ok) bigger than the possibly sick clown? it looks like it is just an issue of stress. is the sick one eating? i would try to get a QT tank setup. maybe get something like a 10gallon tank and put some pots in there with maybe a HOB filter. this should be relatively cheap.

well anyways good luck and that is a great looking fish! hope he/she pulls through

Unhappy

well the LFS sold me quick cure formalin and told me to do 1 gallon of fresh water and 3 drops of the quick cure for 8 minutes...I did that and now the fish looks really bad, he is topsy turvy all over the top of the tank and appears to be dying. Do I attempt another dip or is it a waste of time at this point? Any suggestions (quickly..not much time) would be great..thanks

Also I wouldnt use the dip at the first place before knowing exactly if it's parasite. So at the moment I think you shouldnt use more dip since it seems the fish is really stressed by the dip.

I am sorry to hear the loss, and best of luck for your next clownfish.

Still, though I never used dip bath myself before, I read the article from this link someone just provided, and it says water from the tank or close to make the mixture, which I assume SW, not FW.
http://www.petsforum.com/personal/tr...alinbaths.html

Using formalin in FW, sounds like a double dose to me to treat parasite. And if it's not parasite, these wouldnt help anyway.
Well I am also new myself, so I am not of much help here. But maybe something else is not right you need to find out to make sure next time you are more successful.

False perc in my mind is easier to raise than some other clownfish.
