Another horrific gun incident!!!

Police Say 5-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shot Mother
Gun's Recoil Hit, Wounded Boy In Forehead

UPDATED: 10:28 am EST February 28, 2005

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Texas mother is hospitalized in fair condition after police say her 5-year-old son shot her in the back.

A police spokesman said the boy found his parents' 9 mm pistol in the master bedroom of their south Fort Worth home late Sunday afternoon.

Police Lt. Gene Jones said the boy fired one round through the chair in which his mother was sitting while working on the family computer. Jones said investigators believe the shooting was accidental.

Police said the boy's father and 14-year-old brother were in another room and called police.

The woman was airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The gun's recoil hit and wounded the boy in the forehead. He was taken by ambulance to Cook Children's Medical Center, where he was treated for the wound and discharged.

The boy's father works for the Tarrant County Jail, but the gun was his personal weapon, KXAS-TV in Dallas reported.

Investigators are looking into whether to charge the parents.

Pretty scary to think about!!!

It's really not that hard to properly secure a weapon when you know you have young, curious children about the house. This is just a shame and shows a lack of responsibility on the parents' part.

I hate to be callous, but this almost sounds like a nomination for the Darwin Awards. Thank god the innocent kid wasn't injured seriously.

I totally agree that its the parents fault this happened... If You are going to have guns in your home with small children you better know how to properly secure them!

But... I dont think charges should be filed against the parents. Mom was shot, I think she learned her lesson about keeping the guns in a safe secure place.

Although the parents could use a good gun safety course. Thankfully no one was killed.

I agree that guns should be secured, but the idea of sending the parents to jail in this incident should be beyond consideration. If the shooting didn't "rehabilitate" them, then jail ain't goin' to do a durn thing.

This story reminds me that my 6-year-old is almost strong enough to chamber a round on my 9mm. I reckon' it is time to lock it.

P.S. Not exactly Darwin Award material since they already procreated. Plus, the DA board would just say this is a common, dumb accident that happens 300~400 times per year (like drowning when you jump in the water to save a person from drowning).

You leave a loaded gun laying around in your house unlocked?

You bunch of gun crazed Americans...

No offence meant, I've never even seen a real gun in my life! and we don't lock our doors here...we're pretty laid back and i don't see the need foe a gun in every household.

What's the point? That's like saying "Is it really that hard to keep your computer and monitor in a different room?" You defeat the purpose.

When there are no kids in the house or little kids, elevation and lack of strength keeps them safe. When they are older, a trigger lock or clip lock will do the trick. Problem is, when a gun is locked it doesn't serve it's purpose of home protection very well. I agree that if you own 18 guns, that 17 should be locked away, but one needs to be accessible unless you have kids old enough to load them or irresponsible teenagers you can't trust in the house. The people in this story obviously had a round chambered in their 9mm. I can't imagine a 5-year-old being strong enough to pull the slide back. They unsafely stored their gun and suffered the consequences. Be safe, not dumb.

You must carry a Glock. In your business, though, a safety can be a bad thing.

First off, I don't own a gun.

I've never been able to understand the usefulness of a gun that is owned for protection if the gun is locked in a box and not easily accessible when you really need it.

I think the parents are at fault here and I kind of like Runner's line about being safe, not dumb.
