Need help buying a new lens.

So I'm loving the DR, much more so than any of my previous questions, and decided to buy myself an early birthday present.

How is this lens?
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Its on this page...
http://www.vistek.ca/details/detail_...&Specs=N&Box=N
And its holy cheap!!! is it cheap coz its crap? Or will it be decent for photos? I'm not ready to plunk 500 down on a lens yet.
=)

I also saw some cheap FD lenses. Will these work with the rebel? I don't mind manual focus too much if the lens is good.

Its cheap because it's a simple prime. Its an excellent quality lense regardless of the price. The 1.4 will be a bit better though, but will cost twice as much.

I was doing some reading after I posted.
It sounds like its an excellent lens to learn about photography, but I guess won't be that good for reef photos, because its not a macro.

Has anyone tried the Sigma 28-135 3.8-5.6? It sounds like an interesting focal length and decent macro and a great price.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a no brainer. Cheap, sharp and fast so go get it.

I agree great lens... I try to stay with Canon glass, why spend a bunch of money on a good body only to make it look through lesser optics?

Do you mean the 28-105?

Here is a product review of that lens, I don't have it but it looks pretty decent. I DO have the 28-135 IS and love it, not so much for the macros but for its OVERALL utility.

You mentioned the 250d, I would say go for the 500d as it gives you more working distance, also I would say get the 77mm and a "step down" ring, that way it will fit pretty much every lens you may eventually acquire.

Thx guys!
I think I'm gonna go for the 25-105 and the 50mm 1.8.
I'm pretty satisfied with the macros I'm getting now with the kit lens, especialy since the photos I'm liking I could crop even more if I wanted. So I'm satisfied on the reef photography Front.

Now just to practice my regular photography skills.

i have the 28-105mm, i like this lens alot, this lens is on my camera most of the time; but i do want the 28-135IS which a buddy of mine has which is just ever so slightly sharper.
i also have the 50mm 1.8, this is a no brainer, i got it for $50, and it takes great shots. I haven't yet tried either of these with my 250D (just got the 250D and haven't played around with it much due to lack of time.) I have put the 250D on my 100mm macro, and I do like the results so far, but again need more playing time. I'll let you know how the 250D plays with the 50mm and 28-105mm.

500D is for longer focal lengths, 70+ IIRC and 250D is for shorter focal lengths. My 500D is useless on the 18-55.
