yellow tang colors...?

i was at a store and they have a lot of yellow tangs... i noticed that some are not as yellow as the others... the sales lady informed me that those fishes that are not as yellow are females and will never get as yellow as the others... ever... but i was wondering if this is really the case with the differences in color or are they isolated causes like the individual fish's diet...?

I have never heard of that in my life. My YT's do change from a vibrant yellow to a bit less yellow from time to time. Especially when they are eating, they are bright, but afterwards when theyre full their color does fade a bit. I don't know how to sex them but I really doubt it is through thier color, but who knows.

these fish are not dimorphic, the lighter colors ones are because they are stressed

If it's not a vibrant yellow, stay away from it, because it's stressed or not healthy. Wait until you see a better one.

Like JDM130 said, they seem to change colors with mood. My YT is very vibrant, but when it gets scared/nervous, it will dull. If the fish is constantly dull, it's a sign of a problem.

Good luck finding a good one.

wow, what a line, i will have to remember that one... no i believe you were seeing a stressed out tang, get one that is VERY fat, eating, and bright. If one of these three things is missing, pass on it.
Oh and look for marks, or spots, or fuzzy patches.. rough handling.
