You shouldn't have a problem with heavy metal (rock on!) contamination with a RO/DI unit. However, something to consider is the amount of waste water. It might be worth looking into spending a little more on a Poly Bio Marine Kold Ster-il system. Removes all the garbage from the water (but doesn't change the hardness!). Bonus is that you have water instantly or at least as fast as your tap pressure will push through to the other side, with no waste.
While it's true they do cost about twice as much as a "quality" RO/DI unit, you are going to save money in 2 ways: No waste water increasing your Utility bill and only about $50 bucks, TOTAL, for all the replacement cartridges. You are going to spend at least twice that when you have to replace the carbon, micron and DI cartridges (not to mention the membrane itself).

An RO membrane alone will remove an average of about 99% of copper in tap water.
